Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

Reinember nisar season end last year we had absolutely no push from DL?  Green Bay game, Philly, Colts, Giants, Falcons, Seatle?  Short got warned out and QBs took us apart in 4th qtr... We need more push up the middle all 60 minutes...  Not 40 mins.

Gonna have to say we let up In tbose Games. Outside seattle amd second atlanta game (which was fuxed), we wwer Just trying to end the game.

There is a reason for those let ups. D-line got exhausted by the 10 minute mark in the 4th, and QB's had pretty much all day to pick us apart. Perfect example is that Colts game. Our D-line was straight SMASHING Luck into the ground. Then by the 10 minute mark in the 4th what happened? D-line noticeably got gassed and Luck had all damn day to throw and just tore our secondary apart. And that's just one of many examples from last year. Hopefully with Butler, that won't happen anymore as he will allow KK and Star more rest throughout games while having no dropoff. Like people said, now we would be dominating O-lines for 60 minutes instead of 50 minutes, which is a HUGE difference between a loss and a win.

Massive conversation on this in the Draft Pick thread that went 38 pages.

From that thread two comments I made was:

Refer to the snap counts already posted in this thread, Short had too many, Soliai replaces Dwan. Plenty of snaps left for Butler as everyone gets rotated more than last year. Less late game defensive drop-offs as a result.

Basically "rotational" is not only "depth" you need at least 4 DTs as "starters", we should roll with 5 on gamedays.

Some of you need to watch this and realise that Getts is talking straight when he says what he says. He flat out answers some of the issues you have with this pick.

You still won't like the answers he gives, and that's totally fine, but at least you'll have the answers about "why":

I guess my perspective of this is that he's not a rotational guy. He will play in the rotation in the 4-3 defense on the defensive line, but he will likely "start" in many formations for certain situations.

Its kind of the equivalent of saying your 3rd wideout starts. Whatever, he's going to stomp faces anyways. Im sure Brees and Matty Lice didnt like the pick and Jameis is too young to know it yet.

This^^^

People are not understanding that DT is different than most positions on the field.  Starters do NOT play nearly all of the downs.  Starting DT's play 50-60% of the snaps.  So, basically you have 3-4 "starting" DT's that play close to the same number of snaps.  This is the recipe for successfully keeping pressure on the QB for 4 full quarters.

Yep, it's like a hockey line or tag team partners in wrestling.

Im not going to completly disagree, but In close games, they kept pressure consistent, not exhausted at all. That.... leads me to believe we played vanilla d while up by 4 scores throughout the season. Just my personal observations

I don't think we've featured 5 on GameDay.  We typically have 4 on the active roster at any given time unless an injury has forced us to carry an extra. As soon as Star was healthy last year they cut Cole. Maybe they change that but it's been 4 the last several years.

I'm not positive, but I think CJ's injury played into the decision to cut Cole.  We brought in two guys to replace CJ - Allen & Delaire, so someone had to get cut.

I'd have to check the transaction dates to see if I'm remembering correctly.

The year prior was the same.

Star came back for game 3. Cole played the first two, did not play at all the third week and then was cut. He was already inactive before CJ got hurt.

Hell, we didn't even bring in a DT to cover for Dwan when he was injured midseason for a few games. That's a primary reason Kawann got so many snaps last year. We played a few games with only 3 healthy DTs and Kawann was the only 3T. Kony went inside a little more to compensate but I think Addison was also dinged up at the time so for the most part Kawann was doing nearly the whole job there. I think that played a major role in some of those late game defensive collapses.

I think KK might be able to shift to the outside.

This ain't Madden...you don't move arguably the best DT in 2016 to DE because you drafted a DT.

You want KK on the field for every meaningful snap we play.   Sure he needs some breaks but getting him on the sideline or moving him is the opposite of what you want to do with that caliber of player

People keep claiming our DTs got tired as a defense of this pick.

only thing that stood out was despite elite DT our DE did virtually nothing for huge chunks of the season.  The DEs were the issue

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
