Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

Here is an excerpt that really speaks to your question:

In the Panthers' press conference minutes after the pick, Rivera and Gettleman were asked why the Panthers passed at defensive end with prospects forecast as first-round picks like Kevin Dodd and Emmanuel Ogbah still available. Rivera admitted there were "a couple of good defensive ends still sitting on the board," but Butler was the highest graded player remaining on the Panthers' board.

Besides, Rivera and Gettleman like Carolina's current defensive end group, and they love what Bulter can bring regardless of his position.

"Ron and I have evaluated the team ad nauseam," Gettleman said. "We feel good about Charles (Johnson). We feel good about Kony (Ealy). We feel good about Mario (Addison). We like Ryan Delaireicon-article-link.gif. He has some solid upside.

"We feel like we have some good, young, raw, talented defensive ends. This kid was the highest rated player on our board, and we just felt he would be more impactful for us."

The biggest thing is the 2 DTs need to take up the center and both guards to leave the DEs with 1 on 1s on the end. Watching last year's games, come 4th quarter, opposing o lines were able to get away from 3 on 2 and we paid the price with coronary comebacks.

The purpose of adding Butler is to make sure that oposing olines can't shift help at the end of the 3rd and in the 4th and our DEs should be able to win those 1 on 1 matchups as well as leave our blitzes virtually unblocked.

Go back and watch the SB if you can and watch what happened especially  once Norwell went out. Our tackles were left without help because the line couldn't hold the blocks up the middle and there was no one that could shift to help. Remmers didn't stand a chance vs Miller 1 on 1.

I see Butler as the nail in the coffin for opposing offenses. It looks like Gman is setting up to do to our opponents what Denver did to us. Cam was good in the SB considering how little time he had to throw and move. Now imagine what happens when we do that to QBs that aren't the league MVP.

Can't have your DBs covering 4 WRs in a spread formation for 8 seconds and expect that nobody's going to get open. This defense was like Jackyl/Hyde last year. When the pressure was on, it looked amazing. When it wasn't, even in the same game, the offense moved the ball at will. A great DL will always make your back seven look better.

Remember that time we drafted Kuechly, and we had Beason?

yeah, I do. Freak accidents or injuries happen all the time.

Excellent pick. They had him at the 20th best player in all the draft.

My reaction in that draft was "did we really need another LB'er no, but anytime you draft the best player at a position in a draft you want hear me complain."

i still liked the Luke pick then even with knowing we didn't need a MLB at the time. I think beacon had already had some injury issues at that point as well.

Here's another...  Butler could end up better than both star and kk.  Shouldn't expect it, but can't rule it out either.  Plus the kid is Panther all day.

If's and buts for later down the road don't really matter. I'm talking right now. And he would be very hard pressed to be as good as short was last year. I don't think he's that level of talent because you don't see short level play everyday that's what makes him special.

I with you Op, unless he has the serious chance playing de i'm just don't see the point of drafting a guy for rotation duties unless a monumental contract negotiation break down occurs. Late games last season our secondary(which was addressed in the draft hopefully) broke down, but more importantly people are forgetting we had Jared Allen starting, and cj injured and a streaky ealy. KK had his type season without to much help from outside rush, even when we blitz with td or luke it was through the a and b gap. Although depth definitely doesn't hurt, surprised to spend a first on it.

That's the difference in views then.  You'd like a defensive end or wideout or even offensive lineman who may or may not be an improvement over the current crop, but gives you no real feeling he could be an every down dominant player that another player at a position of lesser need has a greater potential to be over the course of the contract.  I guess in that case go with the player you like in the short term improvement.  It be a shame to be drafting over him a year or two down the road for the same reason.  This is simply a case of getting a player you really like in the draft, and different people are gonna have different opinions until there is a reflection of body of work.  While Ogbah and Dodd could be solid players I have no problem with Gentleman, a man rich in experience and dedication to football scouting, taking a player who he likes better.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
