Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

Dwan Edwards played 50% of D snaps last year and he is gone.  We did not have a backup UT behind KK.  Butler will take Star's spot on passing downs as well.  He's a lock to play ~50% of D snaps if he remains healthy.  Shaq only played ~30% last year.

Realistically, no one available that late was going to step in and be an instant NFL starter.

Our weaknesses on D were line depth and talent /athleticism in the secondary. A pass rushing UT like Butler helps both of those issues (and DG addressed the latter in spades later in the draft).

You sold yourself, he's a rotational player on a defense that believes (with good reason) rotating interior DL with no drop off allows them to put consistent pressure on the passer while stopping the run and allowing our all-pro LB's roam free and make plays.

We essentially just spent a first round pick on a player that best case scenario is a rotational player this year, and maybe a starter next year if KK or Stars contract negotiations breakdown really bad. But we definitely were not in dire need of another DT.

We have a open need at DE right now, and we had Dodd and Ogbah still available at the time, both of which went within the next 3 picks after us.

I'm not saying that Butler is going to be a bust, what I am saying is that based on need I saw better options available at 30. and I dont understand why we needed another DT right now since our interior DL may already be one if not the best in the NFL.

Remember that time we drafted Kuechly, and we had Beason?

yeah, I do. Freak accidents or injuries happen all the time.

Excellent pick. They had him at the 20th best player in all the draft.

That is what it comes down to.  YOU saw better options, G'man didn't.  I was surprised too that we went DT over DE.  But, Gettleman must think that the young guys we have:  Delaire, Miley, Cox (and possibly the new futures contract guy Webster) are as promising or more promising than Dodd & Ogbah.

Adding another DE would have meant losing one of the young guys we're already developing.

(Others above me have already made and excellent case why Butler was a very good pick and will contribute in extremely helpful ways to our D, including our pass rush.  I'm just adding why we didn't jump to add a DE).

This right here is why I was against Dodd and Ogbah and I'm glad we didn't draft them. Edge players take longer to develop and those guys were not going to play ahead of anybody we already have and be effective.

Gettleman evidently believes that the answer to our pass rush issues is already on the roster or he possibly has a name stuffed in his back pocket somewhere...

Gettleman has earned our trust, dude is reigning NFL Exec of the year.. Let him do what he does.

makes the tackles even stronger.  will be harder to stop our ends by default.  will be blowing up the interior of any and all o-lines from Q1 to Q4.

not worried about end.  ealy is primed to take off and with how CJ approached his contract he clearly wants to prove to all he's not done.  love a highly motivated CJ.

I feel like you could go back a couple years and just insert "Short" into the title for "Butler."

"We just drafted Star, why do we need another DT?!"

Or even just last year with Shaq despite our LBs. Gettleman loves his "first round grades," regardless of position.
