Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

Dwan was aging, Love was working his way into the mix, and ultimately Star and KK had to play more snaps than Rivera wanted. The big guys wear down. Bring in another young and talented DT to rotate and you can have an interior push that can pose problems all year and keeps every guy fresh

Remember near season end last year we had absolutely no push from DL?  Green Bay game, Philly, Colts, Giants, Falcons, Seatle?  Short got warned out and QBs took us apart in 4th qtr... We need more push up the middle all 60 minutes...  Not 40 mins.

I think the getting pretty much no pressure from anyone not named Short on the D-line had more to do with that. Ealy was good when he got time, but that wasnt often. I think we could of helped the pressure issue more with a DE.  Like I said already, we already had one of if not the best interior DL's in the NFL, our DE situation tho, not even top 10.

Well obviously DG felt Butler was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 2 DEs taken right after him. I trust his 30+ years of scouting hogmollies. If they were that close then I am sure DG would have gone DE. Remember in his press conference he thinks Butler was going to big impact on alot of plays.

If he can truely play all 4 DL positions then he's a great pickup, but saying it and seeing it are two different things

It seemed like he wasn't that impressed with guys like Ogbah and Dodd compared to the guys on our roster. so he felt the value was better placed with Butler who probably should have been a top 20 pick.

If any of our dlineman get tired we can swap him in with zero loss of production. Ealy, KK, Butler, CJ on passing downs is a nightmare to handle. We have a five d-line package and he makes it much better. He was the best player available by far. If any of our DTs are injured he is an insant starter.

I guess I don't see what's not to like about the pick...? The teams that draft like this end up in the Super Bowl. Shane Ray was a similar pick, and so was Shaq, it's not hard to figure out lol

Its not even if he can play all 4 positions. Sure it would be nice if he could. Most DTs only play half the plays anyway. What I'm saying is he maybe a rotational player but he is technically a key contributor because he will play in half the game. Think of it this way. Rotational players aren't that important in other roles because the starters will play 80%+ of the game. When it comes to your DL then you got more like 6-8 players being key contributors because of the nature of the position.

Also we all know how important the pass rush is (aka the DL). So instead of looking at 4 players you need to look at 6-8. This improves the DL and the pass rush. Both things that will heavily improve the team. We basically drafted a 2nd KK and are trying to regain the pass rush dominance we had a few years ago with Hardy.

He was the best player on our board. Why reach for a need. Ogbah and Dodd both had higher bust potential. Ogbah refuses to use his hands and he's stiff, if he doesnt change the way he rushes, he could bust. Kevin Dodd benefited from having Shaq Lawson and Carlos fuging Watkins on his line. Dodd also had no dominate physical attributes for the position of DE, average size, speed.  Vernon Bulter was THE man at LTech and is a multidimensional player. He can anchor and play the 1 tech, he can penetrate as a 3 tech, he's huge, has the short area quickness of a cat and makes people around him better because be fugs poo up in the middle of the field

Short is our only pass rushing DT.  Star,  Soliai, and Love are all run stuffers.  Imagine our pass rush last year without Short.  Butler should bring another DT who can be a disruptive force rushing the passer.

Looking beyond this season, it gives us flexibility.  If we can't get Short locked up this off-season and he has another double digit sack season he could potentially be looking at a Suh type deal.  Not sure we'll be willing to do that.

It's about rotation , star would get more sacks if he wasn't doubles teamed all the time. He had 3 in rookie year I beleive he can have 5 if he gets his 1-1 matchup.
