Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

We essentially just spent a first round pick on a player that best case scenario is a rotational player this year, and maybe a starter next year if KK or Stars contract negotiations breakdown really bad. But we definitely were not in dire need of another DT.

We have a open need at DE right now, and we had Dodd and Ogbah still available at the time, both of which went within the next 3 picks after us.

I'm not saying that Butler is going to be a bust, what I am saying is that based on need I saw better options available at 30. and I dont understand why we needed another DT right now since our interior DL may already be one if not the best in the NFL.

Yeah that pick still makes 0 sense to me, I think DT was the one position we were the most solid at besides QB and LB. Dodd or Ogbah would have made a hell of a lot more sense to me. I'll be kinda pissed if we end up struggling to pressure the qb and/or Butler doesn't even get to see the field very much.

Short is our only pass rushing DT.  Star,  Soliai, and Love are all run stuffers.  Imagine our pass rush last year without Short.  Butler should bring another DT who can be a disruptive force rushing the passer.

Looking beyond this season, it gives us flexibility.  If we can't get Short locked up this off-season and he has another double digit sack season he could potentially be looking at a Suh type deal.  Not sure we'll be willing to do that.

Yeah... my perspective is that it's a weird draft to process as a fan but you can't judge until they play.  The first round seemed to set another precedent for BPA but then we got more loose in regards to needs and were going after our top graded at Positions we needed. I think an issue is being this good made teams more inflexible for us to trade up.

There weren't any guys I was praying to be available when 2 or 3 came around but sure, I was like.."who?" Haha

They are among the best ...when fresh... adding Butler allows a dominate rotation past the first 3 quarters.... combinations are quite interesting now. Insurance and Stability. Guy can play both D tackle spots and perhaps kick out to end on passing downs if needed.

Push the pocket and the qb either gets sacked, forces the throw, or gets flushed into the ends. Qbs don't like inside pressure. As for rushing downs we now have 6 big and very powerful men...2 of which come with above average bend ontop of burst. Not to mention the bull rush that butler has....overwheming.

Apparently, the panthers are really high on Cox, Miley, Webster and Delaire. Now add in year 3 Kony and CJ on a prove it deal.... recipe for good things.

If you thought the line was good last season... it just got better.

You remember a couple years back when we took Kony Ealy and people went apeshit because Morgan Moses was still there?

"We need Oline!!! Not Dline!!! Moses is a 1st round guy, Ealy will be an UDFA!!! Why does Dave hate us so?"

Gettleman is gonna go to the McDonalds on the corner of Frankincense and Myrrh in DC and tell Moses to supersize his order.

And then you'll know.....

Remember near season end last year we had absolutely no push from DL?  Green Bay game, Philly, Colts, Giants, Falcons, Seatle?  Short got warned out and QBs took us apart in 4th qtr... We need more push up the middle all 60 minutes...  Not 40 mins.

That right there. If the QB can step up, he can throw the ball harder and farther. Cut off all avenues.

You do realize that starters on the D line dont play the entire game right? They would be ineffective when they are over used or gassed. Think hockey, those players are only out there for 1.5-2mins because they give it all they have and they come back in to rest afterward. KK only played 69% of the total snaps last year and he was by far the most used DT. That means on average your DTs will play about half the game which means you really need 4 DTs to actually have the position covered. We got our 4 now.  I would say the DL is the place where you constantly need rotations to keep them fresh.

Well here. First off. He's more than a "DT". We were short UTs. He can play any position in the line. That's huge for our defensive line. He can line up in the NT position, the UT position of the RE Or LE position. That's extremely valuable for this organization.  Especially when besides KK,  we didn't have another UT. KK and Butler could be lining up with star and Ealy.. Then Solai, KK, Johnson and Ealy. Etc.  The versatility of the line was improved.  A constant pass rush is essential and beneficial for the secondary that's full of ball hawks.

Well obviously DG felt Butler was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 2 DEs taken right after him. I trust his 30+ years of scouting hogmollies. If they were that close then I am sure DG would have gone DE. Remember in his press conference he thinks Butler was going to big impact on alot of plays.

People don't realize Dwan Edwards played something like 45% of our defensive snaps last year.  Butler is a similar type of player who can get up field and disrupt plays.  This year instead of going KK to Dwan,  we can go KK to Butler.  It also provides side benefits of having someone to fill in if we lose KK to FA or just having depth in that DT role to get up field. It's a smart move for a team that heavily depends on pressure up the middle.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
