My early depth chart of the Panthers atm

We only kept 8 OL most of last year, it makes sense. I mostly agree, though I could see Norwood or Hill over Bersin. We only keep 5 DTs if one is injured, so health providing I think Love is gone. I'm gonna go with a 5th DE instead: Arthur Miley. We gave him one of the biggest signing bonuses in the league song UDFAs last year, and reportedly flirted with the idea of designating him as our IR/designated to return player after his preseason injury. Lastly, while McClain could make it, I could just as easily see that spot going to a special teams speedster like Williams or Jones.

I like the idea of having Oline guys who can play multiple positions on the line, thus reducing the need for extra backups.  In theory I'm ok with 8 Oline guys on the roster.  BUT...

We were really blessed / fortunate with virtually no injuries to our Oline though - especially our tackles.  Here are the Oline snap counts:

Quote

OFFENSIVE LINE

OT Mike Remmers — 1,315

OT Michael Oher — 1,297

G Trai Turner — 1,287

C Ryan Kalil — 1,203

G Andrew Norwell — 1,006

G Amini Silatolu — 238

OL Fernando Velasco — 114

OL Chris Scott — 109

OT Daryl Williams — 83

With a roster of

Oher / Remmers / Williams

Turner / Norwell / Scott

Kalil / Gradkowski

what happens if one of our tackles missed a game or two.  You sub in Williams.  Who backs up Tackle?  It's risky.  Last season we activated Foucault to be emergency backup, but that required waiving someone (Horton I think?) from our 53.

This is how I see where we stand right now. I believe Garrett will take either Norwood's or Bersin's spot. Most likely Norwood since Bersin is at least dependable at catching the ball. O-line depth is lacking.

I also think Boykin is our best outside guy atm then moving inside on nickel and dime packages with McClain or a rookie going outside. I don't think we throw a rookie to the wolves on the outside full time unless he greatly impresses during preseason. At safety, with Coleman's versatility, I think he goes to SS and Boston at FS. Cash and Marlowe backing up. The only thing lacking on D is LB depth.

I hope we add Boldin to our WR group. It would give us another sure-handed WR and we can use Ginn in the slot. We sorely need another WR with sure hands. Also, we should look at signing Scifres at punter. This is one overlooked position that is crucial to our field possession game.

Post your own too if you want. Would like to see others version as well.

Just curious why you have Worley higher than Bradberry seeing that Bradberry was picked first

While it really is WAAAAYYYY too early to be looking at depth charts, since this thread exists, I'll go ahead and post Jonathan Jones' attempt at a curent two-deep depth chart:

In blue are newly added free agents.  Blue bold with asterisk are new draft picks.

Offense

QB: Cam Newton, Derek Anderson

RB: Jonathan Stewart, Cameron Artis-Payne

FB: Mike Tolbert

WR1: Kelvin Benjamin, Ted Ginn Jr.

LT: Michael Oher, Daryl Williams

LG: Andrew Norwell, Gino Gradkowski

C: Ryan Kalil, Gino Gradkowski

RG: Trai Turner, Chris Scott

RT: Mike Remmers, Daryl Williams

TE: Greg Olsen, Ed Dickson

WR2: Devin Funchess, Philly Brown

Defense

LDE: Charles Johnson, Mario Addison

DT: Star Lotulelei, Paul Soliai

DT: Kawann Short, *Vernon Butler

RDE: Kony Ealy, Ryan Delaire

SLB: Shaq Thompson, A.J. Klein

MLB: Luke Kuechly, Ben Jacobs

WLB: Thomas Davis, David Mayo

CB: Bene Benwikere, *James Bradberry

SS: Tre Boston, Dean Marlowe

FS: Kurt Coleman, Colin Jones

CB: Robert McClain, *Daryl Worley

Nickel: Brandon Boykin, *Zack Sanchez

Special teams

P: Swayze Waters, Michael Palardy

K: Graham Gano, Swayze Waters

LS: J.J. Jansen

PR: Ted Ginn Jr., Robert McClain

KR: Fozzy Whittaker, Joe Webb

If my math is right, this totals

19 players on offense (there is some overlap at backup on Oline)

24 players on defense, and

6 players on ST  (including 4 specialists and Fozzy & Webb as returners)

That's 49 total, (or 48 if you get rid of the 2nd punter.)

Room for 4 or 5 more guys on the 53, though I'd argue that one to three of J Jone's guys above could be on the bubble (Robert McClain, Fozzy Whittaker, Colin Jones), meaning maybe as many as 6 - 8 open spots.

Also In the race:

Offense:

RB:  Brandon Wegher,  UDFA Devon Johnson

TE:  *Beau Sandland (draftee), Scott Simonson  (also UDFA Jake McGee )

FB: UDFA Andrew Bonnet

WR:  Stephen Hill, Kevin Norwood, Brenton Bersin, UDFA Keyarris Garrett  (Also:  Damiere Byrd, Cobi Hamilton, and UDFA Jenson Stoshak)

OlineAdditional Vet (OT)??, Dismukes, Yankey, (also: Foucault, Hawkins, Larson, Masifilo)

Defense:

DE:  Arthur Miley; Rakim Cox, Wes Horton (also Larry Webster)

DT: Kyle Love, (also Alecxih, Crume, Thomas)

LB: (probably only competing for a possible spot on ST):  Brian Blechen (also: UDFA Jared Norris)

CB:  Lou Young, Teddy Williams  (also Travell Dixon)

S:  Trenton Robinson, UDFA Jeremy Cash, Marcus Ball, Ras-I Dowling

Gonna be some stiff, stiff competition in Training Camp.

I have one year round that I update on my laptop for the past 10 years. I still have each year too.

Thanks for sharing it with us.  I keep an updated roster spreadsheet, but won't really try a real depth chart / roster prediction until sometime after minicamp.

I don't really disagree. I wouldn't mind adding another player at tackle, just not sure there's anyone worth it out there.

I can kind of understand leaving off Webb and all the rooks after the 5th rounder...until he added a second punter. What.

By the way, our current roster (including draft picks, and the new DT signed off waivers) is up to 78 players.

Add 7 Priority UDFAs we know about and we're up to 85.

Room for 5 more guys.... (though obviously you can't rule out cuts after the draft, and rookie mini-camp... there will be some flux)
