Gettleman's biggest weakness IMO

Recommended Posts

So, we all know Gettleman and his crew can draft.  If we look back over the past 3 years, no one in the league has been better.

However, Gettleman is atrocious at gauging other teams interest in a prospect.  This causes him to consistently draft players based on his perceived value, and not the league consensus value.  He wastes draft picks trading up for players who more than likely would have been available. And takes players rounds early.

We can never be certain of this however.  With the players off the board, we can never be certain they wouldn't have been swipped and we can only see the "media experts" draft boards.  But, I hope Gman gets a better handle on this in the future.

You won't make it in life worrying about what other people think.  GMan has the gumption to stick to this beliefs when the tide is against him.  You have to do you and let it play out.  There's a ying and a yang to everything; with him there's a whole lot more good than bad.

And just how do you know this "league consensus value"? G-Mans "perceived value" is based on a draft board the Panthers spent a couple of million dollars building. Basically fan and media boards are crap.

Worley could've been picked in the 3rd. Pick 62 is barely a round 2 pick....and I really don't get the Bradberry thing but the other guys that were avail weren't home runs. Kendall Fullers knee is fuged. This Laraven Clark guy was one of the worst OT I've ever seen at the Senior Bowl. Braxton Miller is Armanti Edwards with a bum shoulder. I would've rather had Jeremy Cash or Austin Hooper at 62, but ultimately fans like us and the Mayocks and Kipers of the world don't know true value of guys. It truly doesn't matter where other teams rank guys man, there's 32 teams, it only takes one to take your player.

One the one hand, I think you make a really great point and I wish Gettleman wouldn't trade up for some prospects who would very likely be there when we picked anyways.

On the other hand: I think Gettleman is going about this the right way. If you like a guy, go get him and forget what people think (mama taught me that years ago...)

I'm still trying to gauge why people considers last years draft some huge success? Last season was the first time in forever none of our rookies were even the race for ROY.

Till this day I still say we reached on Shaq and Funchess. Shaq won't even become a full time starter till 2 or 3 years, Funchess couldn't beat out Cotchery.

And what if some team "reached" and scooped up the exact same players, causing Gettleman to REALLY start scrambling. Gettleman went out and got who he wanted on his terms instead of hoping another team doesn't pick them up. It only takes one team to take your player and I have a good feeling it happened tons before our picks so Gettleman just said fug it.

If some team is willing to trade UP to draft a KICKER in round 2, then Gettleman can't trust the other 31 GMs to know what their doing and put the same value Gettleman does on players. Quite frankly, that's how he can find players like KK and Trai Turner in the 2nd and 3rd rounds

if the panthers used all their draft picks this year, realistically, not all of them would've made the 53

trading lower round picks to get guys that you really like seems like good business to me

and does "league consensus value" mean anything when guys like dimitrioff are in that consensus?
