Sorry. Gettlemens Draft This Year Blows

I actually have no problems in this draft. DG effectively identified the areas of need for this team and he filled it out. Think offense first. Are we going to draft any linemen, wr, or te that will replace the current set or backups? Probably not. We had one of the best offenses last year and any offense player drafted in round 2 or later would seriously have a hard time making this team as a backup.

Now onto defense where we are super solid on LBs and the DL is pretty strong with the secondary being very questionable. We draft the BPA in round 1 which is a DT to rotate with KK and Star and improve pass rush. That is great! If he can be a similar player to KK then we got ourselves another steal. We are basically stacked everywhere else besides DE CB and S. DG is very excited about the DE group and thinks we got great talent there which means no one needed from the draft at DE who can replace the current backup DEs. So in next few rounds we throw everything at CB because really that is the only position of need on this entire team except safety. We have Bene and that is it so we take 3 CBs and bam our team is already looking very good.

bruh. The offensive line has no depth.  And will continue to have no depth unless gettlemen starts drafting a few. A couple of injuries to that line and Cam is back to running for his life.  Carolinas oline was clobbered in the Superbowl.  Its a position of need and its being ignored.  Those guys protect Cam.  Cam gets hurt, the season is over.  It is extremely important to have quality depth there.

Well DG felt that the CBs were a much bigger need and the talent level was better than the OL. You make the best of what is available. Just cuz you want OL doesn't mean your going to get it. It is like the past 2 years where we needed to upgrade to OL but we had to settle for KB and Shaq because it was BPA and OL was very far off from BPA.

Life gives you a certain hand and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. The worst thing you can do is to dig too deep and reach far down. That is how you end up with busts. Trust in DG and his scouts. If he says both CBs were 2nd rd grades and he picked them then you gotta trust him. They put in thousands of hours into the process and he has done this for decades. He understands the big picture as a whole.

Name an offensive lineman at our picks that would've contributed better than any of our starters amd would've filled a better need than compared to our pre-draft skim secondary situation. We had to bring in FA's last year because our CB depth was atrocious. Our secondary is our obvious position of need, OLine Dave may have to just work some magic in FA until the season begins. I trust he knows what he's doing. I mean he's getting paid lots of money to do this...and buy milkshakes occasionally.

He drafted 3 cornerbacks, who drafts 3 CB's when the first and second one are "2nd rd grades". DG reached all right especially for Worley and he didn't need to. I have no problem with the players, it's where they was drafted and what was given up for them. They're strictly system corners with size, without a pass rush they're struggle. As of right now however, I can already see the defensive plan is to switch up the rotation of DB's to mask their weakness and confuse offenses

DG must have believed that Worley was worth it in the 3rd rd. He doesn't have to give up much to get him. Similar to the bene trade up a couple of years ago.

It really isn't neccessary questioning the 3rd corner in the 5th rd. It is the 5th rd and most picks in this range are long shots. He may have been BPA and had a 3rd or 4rd grade on him. He is also a safety blanket in case the first 2 corners don't work out. We probably needed at least 2 corners from this draft and we got 3. I don't see a problem with this.

Its definitely gonna take magic. Hers the issue. You cant keep everybody. So we have 3 corners draft that are not going to start for a year and wont see much playing time.  he cant risk moving them to the practice squad without another team swooping in and taking them.  So these 3 cbs will use rosters spots to mainly watch and to come in when boykin/bene need a breather.  This doesnt exactly leave open roster spots for a FA OL etc.  I can understand bringing in a CB to groom behind your current starters, but bringing in 3 to groom simultaneously is wasting roster spots.  Dont believe me, write your own 53 man roster and look at the cuts you will have to make.  Its not pretty.

You do realize that this happens every draft. Most draft picks will take someones spot. Plus with Norman, Peanut, and Finn gone we have these guys to replace them.

This is actually a great spot to be in. We probably have the fewest problems compared to the rest of the NFL teams and we got a massive salary cap to boot. We got an inexperienced secondary and lack of depth on OL. That is amazing. Half the teams out there have been looking for a franchise QB for one or 2 decades on top of having a ton of issues on defense and offense. We are in a great spot and we have honestly never looked better on paper.

QB - MVP CAM

RB- Stew is great

WR- KB Funchess Ginn Brown - super solid

TE- Olsen - one of the best

OL- Above avg but lacks depth

DL - one of the best in the NFL esp in the interior

LB- prob the best group in the nfl

DB- got kurt but rest is inexperienced

Now if you look at that picture. You can see why DG picked the way he did. We are balling in just about every lane except DBs. AND wait... we got about 20mil in salary cap. Do you guys realize how awesome this is?!?!?

OK,  it's the day after so no longer a knee jerk reaction. This still feels like a reach to me.  I get that big Vern was gettleman's bpa so I'm cool with that pick,  but 2 cb's that most thought were 3-5th rounders?  What does g-man know that no one else does? Is bradberry a safety?  Did Worley drop due to legal trouble?  I have to trust in gettleman but he's not making it easy.

In relation to how long the process takes, it's still a knee jerk reaction. Josh took almost three years to become JNo. You can be mad in 2019.

This^^^.  The Panthers have never been so deep on talent, ever.   They also have an incredible amount of cap space for such a talented team.   That cap space is still available to address the few areas of concern remaining.

Nice rational analysis... makes a lot of sense (I pied it), and I'm pretty good with the draft as a whole.  Would give it a B, especially with the UDFAs added in.

The very next post, however, also makes a really really valid point, and this is where I think taking 3 CBs hurts us most:

THIS is very true. And, as much as I like Sanchez as a potential player, I was really quite shocked that we didn't go for one of the fairly solid OTs we'd visited with (Haeg or Shell) in the 5th.  2 CBs I could see.  3 CBs seemed 1 too many.

Unless David Foucault has quietly transformed into a player who could start, or this unknown Hawkins turns into a hidden gem like Norwell or Remmers, we are razor thin at tackle.  And heck, even Daryl Wiliams who many of us are excited about, is basically an unproven rookie who played 83 snaps the entire season (and a lot of those were on jumbo packages).   This would be bad enough even if Remmers & Oher were locked up for several years, but with both of them going into contract years...??? !!!  We really need another tackle.  I'd assumed we'd get someone we could develop over 1 - 2 years who would then become a long-term starter for us.  But that didn't happen.  So we're going to have to plug this hole with a bargain bin FA.  I trust Gettleman can find someone, but really, it doesn't seem ideal.

Oline has me really concerned.

Draft a 3rd String DT in the 1st round and double dip on 6th round CBs in the 2nd/3rd rounds.  He did the exact opposite of what hes been preaching for the past few years and reached for a position of need twice.  I get he likes these guys but he could have gotten them much lower in the draft.  He could have trade down the 2nd rounder and picked up the pick he needed to move up to get worley.  Just some really poor value.  I wont call them wasted picks because they may be good players.  Just horrible value.

I bet DG knows more about football and talent evaluation than you do...
