Current WR's vs Potential Rookies

I keep running though mocks and it is really evident we dont have a lot of positional NEEDS coming into the draft especially on the Offensive side of the ball. I think there is a high probability that we pick a few offensive positions even though our only real needs are a developmental OT, RB, and arguably a TE. I really do think though that our recieving corps is a deep as it has been since Smitty and Moose, but that will not stop Gettleman from picking a late WR, or an earlier one if they fall in our laps.

Is what is crazy to me is not only the size of our WR corps, but also their age. Take a look at our depth chart right now. Such an Improvement from 3 years ago. We do know that the Panthers have been snooping and checking out WR prospects and have even expressed some very strong interest in drafting or getting some UDFA’s to compete. I have taken height weight and age to show our roster, and the targets that we have interviewed or met with to see how they stack up. Have any favorites? Who would we drop from our current roster to carve out a spot for?

Name                           Height         Weight           Age

Devin Funchess          6'4            225 lbs          21 (May 21st)

Damiere Byrd             5'9             175 lbs         23 (Jan 27th)

Corey "Philly" Brown  5'11           185 lbs          24 (Dec 16th)

Kelvin Benjamin          6'5            245 lbs          25 (Feb 5th)

Stephen Hill                6'4            215 lbs          25  (April 25th)

Cobi Hamilton            6'2            200 lbs           25   (Nov 13th)

Brenton Bersin           6'3            210 lbs           25  (May 9th)

Kevin Norwood           6'2            200 lbs          26  (Sept 23rd)

Ted Ginn  Jr                5'11           185 lbs         31  (April 12th)

Targets:

Sterling Shepard          5’10        194 lbs              23 (Feb 10th)

Tyler Boyd                   6’1          197 lbs            22 (Nov 15th)

Michael Thomas          6’3           212 lbs           23 (March 3rd)

Braxton Miller             6’1          201 lbs            23 (Nov 30th)

Pharoh Cooper             5’11         210 lbs           21 (March 7th)

Moritz Behringer          6’4          207 lbs           23

Keyarris Garrett            6’3          220 lbs           23 (Set 26th)

Chris Moore                  6’1          206 lbs          22 (June 16th)

Hunter Sharp                5’11         198 lbs          22 (April 25th)

Cody Core                    6’3            205 lbs         22 (April 17th)

I really think that in our current roster we have 3 players that are guaranteed to make the roster this year: KB, Funch, and Ginn. I think there are another 3 that have a fighting chance: Philly, Norwood, Hill. There are 3 longshots in Byrd, Bersin, and Hamilton. I think there is definitely room for a Shepard/Boyd/Cooper to make the roster outright, or a late pick or UDFA to fight for a position.

I've never said this... like ever.....

But I got good feeling about Hill this year.

I just saw how young our WR core is... wow. Funchess is 21? He's just going to get better. I dont see us jumping up to get a receiver though. If one falls to us, we'll take one... but with the other needs we have, I'm not sure DG jumps up again for WR.

I think he only jumps up for a DB or a lineman.

I know this doesn't specifically address the topic of the thread, but it does address some of the points made: I think people should consider more than the upcoming season when you're talking about "need."

After this year, quality depth at CB, DE, and OT is virtually nil.
