Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

You're really dumb if you can't see what the rotation is for us. I mean, seriously. We lost Dwan and Cole. Does it not compute with you that we needed a NT and UT this offseason? We got Soliai via free agency and now Butler via the draft.

Our third downs are gonna be the stuff of nightmares:

Ealy/Addison - Short - Butler - Johnson/Delaire

Try reading before you comment. It might help the flow of the conversation.

Usually, the way a conversation works is you respond to the message you are quoting. You quote me talking about the long-term value of this pick and/or long term implications, and then proceed to respond by talking about the short-term value. Something "does not compute," but it's not on my end, friend.

1st series DT's - Star and KK

2nd series DT's - Star and KK

3rd series DT's - Soliai and Butler

ROTATE THROUGHOUT GAME

3rd and long DT's - KK and Butler

3rd & Short/goalline DT's - Star & Soliai

2015 snaps

KK - 897

Star - 633

Dwan - 447

Love - 343

Cole - 49

2016 snaps

KK - 800

Star - 600

Butler - 450 (replaces Dwan)

Soliai - 345

Love - 100 (injury insurance)

Butler will get more than enough action, at least as much as Dwan did last year.

This is what roration means. The pick was fine.

And he did just that.

Funny, people are freaking out because they base their decisions on need.  I am telling you, we have the best DTs in the NFL now.  That will take attention away from the DEs--  There were only a few DTs in this draft who can do what Butler does.  Nice move.

Wonder if we have a trade up in store for the second round?

Most logical post I've seen over this pick. Clearly DE help is needed, instead of reaching for a player late, fortify the DTs and take attention away from the ends. Also, I agree I think we will trade up. Maybe the second or third but I bet it does happen.

I don't doubt that Butler will be a good player for us. The only concern I have is that your first round picks are supposed to be starters. DG even stated 1st and 2nd rounds we usually pick starters. Yeah you can say we heavily rotate our DTs and he would keep KK and Star fresh, but you didn't need to spend a first round pick to get a solid DT in rotation. Especially when all of them were falling into the second round. This is why it concerns me that Star may not be with us much longer. He too was a first round pick, but if we feel he isn't adequate enough in the future we have Butler to step in. Or if we think Butler surpasses Star, we may no longer need him. That situation would make this pick make more sense for me. Olsen and CJ aren't getting any younger and outside CB is still weak. Would've liked to get a starter or eventual starter instead. But all just my opinion at the moment.

In case y'all haven't heard, winter is coming... So, we're building us a wall.

I like the pick. We now have the ability to have two fresh all-pro caliber DTs for the duration of the game. That rotation in the middle is going to free up the ends and sides more, and won't make us yo-yo players like Horton.
