Matt Miller: Panthers have done "heavy work" on Michael Thomas

1st round? Not a chance.  Potentially the 2nd.  More like 3rd.  The guy absolutely disappears way too often.  In over half of his games last year he had 4 or fewer catches.  Only 2 100 yard games.  Never caught more than 7 passes.  No multiple TD games.  In their one loss to MSU - the biggest game of the season for them - the one loss that kept them out of the Big 10 championship game and the college playoff - he had 2 catches for 8 yards.

I ultimately trust Gettleman, but if he's the pick at #30 I'll be seriously concerned that the Gman just picked his first 1st round bust.

Proof

Yes, proof that you're putting words in my mouth.  You claimed I said that he would be a bust as in I definitively stated that.  Thanks for quoting my post to clearly point out that I did not say that.  Being seriously concerned that a guy will be a bust is not definitively stating that he WILL be.  There's a lot more that goes into the being a successful NFL player than what we can see on the field and those factors fans just aren't going to have access to and that's why I'll rarely definitively state that a guy will be a bust of a star.

Do I want Thomas at #30?  Hell no, but if he's the pick I'll hope like hell that I'm wrong. With that said, I think there's virtually no chance he's the pick at #30.

OK cool like you said that's your opinion. To me he is worth a late 1st or early 2nd  but at the end of day no one knows where any of these prospects will end up. I just want good value in the first 3 rounds and I know we will get that.

Good read.

This stuck out to me and it's a HUGE red flag.

"There has been talk about Thomas struggling to master the Ohio State offense early on in college, which led to him being redshirted his sophomore year after playing a bit during his freshman campaign."

That's one of those "other factors" I was talking about earlier and it's a big one.  One of the things the staff really like about Funchess was that they felt he was really coachable and grasped concepts well yet he still had a ton of issues adapting to the pro game early on.  He admitted to being completely lost on the field at times.  NFL offenses are infinitely more complex than college offenses and inability to grasp those concepts is a big reason why a lot of prospects disappoint.  I LOVED Jaelen Strong coming out of Arizona State but I'm glad we passed on him.  Evidently he's an idiot who can't grasp an NFL offenses.  The only way to tell that is the interviews and talking to his coaches, IF they're honest.  Interview is the best bet.

Could be the problems with Hill and Norwood. I think Norwood is smart enough, but our offensive system is kind of intricate and takes time to adapt to. If a player has a hard time grasping playbooks, I too agree that it would shoot up a huge red flag. After researching the Erhardt-Perkins style of play, it shows that you need personnel with decent-to-above-average football IQ.  It's not just about running a nine route or changing your out route, to a post route.

That being said, I do like Thomas a lot as a WR and think he could thrive here. He's not like Funch nor Benji, though he's also not a small slot guy either. If we took him in the 2nd, I'd be okay with it, but do hope that the offensive playbook is either a rumor, or he's improved his cognitive skills in that regard since.

LG, I feel you need to add a few thoughts to your reasoning.

You are right in your statements above, why is that? OSU did not throw the ball at all, for starters. That as you know will greatly limit your WR stats. Well why didn't they throw?.... They roaded Elliot like the work horse he is and he also caught a few passes further limiting the production of WRs\TEs. Its like the opposite of seeing a college WR with 95 recs, then you watch gameplay and see over half where bubble screens..... Fake\fraud  recs\stats.

Now I'm no draft expert, but I'm more right than wrong. I drove the hype bus for KB,  while over 70% hated him here. This year's draft has been the hardest ever in terms of who's better. Especially for DBs and WRs. In the beginning I only had Treadwell as the only WR in my top 32(verge thread in draft forum). After a few weeks it became clear doctson was the best WR in this class. After that is just like the CBs, 2-8 players could easily be #2 WR.

In the end I put Michael Thomas as the next best WR, he is my final talent in my top 32. Both he and Millar are verrry difficult to rank due to the limited opportunity each received. But I came away a fan. Not idea what type draft will unfold, what spots will be run on, will many teams feel they can wait on DL cause it's so deep or the opposite, trades, what's positions are overrated by media\GMs or underrated, etc etc. So if their a giant run on DL, no keanu Neal, no OTs, no CBs worthly..... Thomas could\should be play.
