PFF Presents Carolina's Draft Board

I thought this was an interesting approach. PFF has published team specific draft boards (top 150 players), based on PFF's player rankings and then adjusted based on team scheme. Obviously, their rankings may differ greatly from the Panthers' staff but I like the approach. For instance, they rank Carl Joseph at 31 but 18 on our board and Jarred Goff at 4 but 12 on our board (doubt he's nearly that high). They also offer commentary on three or four players in each of the first three rounds, who could be potential picks.

Round 1 (31st overall)

Karl Joseph, S, West Virginia

Joseph is the only true safety worthy of first-round status, even after tearing his ACL after just 240 snaps in 2015. The former Mountaineer was all over the field intercepting five passes and flying up in run defense. Any team that picks Joseph will be getting an active playmaker.

Emmanuel Ogbah, ED, Oklahoma State

The Panthers are in dire need of a playmaking pass rusher and Ogbah fits that bill. He graded as PFF’s third-best pass rusher in 2015 and did so with the third-best pass rushing productivity in the class as well.

Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State

While we see the Ohio State version of Michael Thomas as someone that should be off the board by this time, his average production in the past two years on a talented Buckeyes team might scare some teams. Fear not, Thomas has the size, speed, route running and separation skills to succeed in the NFL and should not be overlooked.

Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Mississippi

Reed is a versatile corner that can play in any scheme.  The Panthers have a reputation for playing a heavy cover-3 zone concept but in actuality, it’s one of many schemes they run.  Reed has the prototypical size of an NFL corner with blazing sub-4.4 40 speed.  The only question with Reed is his level of competition, but he dominated his competition, allowing just 48.3 percent of passes thrown his way to be caught and grading as our third best coverage corner in 2015.

Because of course Carolina would take a huge reach at a position we don't put a lot of value in the 1st. This is honestly the first I've heard of Kalan Reed being this high.

That being said, I'd have no problem taking Joseph but I don't think we've met with him, considering his knee that would be a huge leap of faith by Gettleman.

Don't know why they have Joseph on the board. Panthers didn't even visit with him.  Has Gettleman ever drafted someone that high and not have the team visit?

He hasn't but PFF is more doing this as an exercise in how a team's draft board might/should look rather than actually trying to predict how it looks. They are taking their rankings of prospects which is weighted almost entirely on their grading of the players then applying scheme fit and perceived positional need to make the draft boards. It's obviously not exactly what Gettleman's board is nor is it likely close to Gettleman's board but that is not what they are trying to do. They are saying "these are our rankings of the players and if we are the Panthers this is how our draft board would look."

I actually really like the idea of Joe Thuney in the 2nd (or 3rd). He'd make a great backup that can play all along the line, as he did so at State, everywhere but Center.  He mayyyyy be able to develop into a starter at LT, as he certainly was more than capable at State, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it. Because like the article said, it wasn't always pretty.  I always wondered how he was able to be so consistent on what was otherwise a pretty porous O-Line when he isn't some kind of physical specimen and he didn't appear to have phenomenal technique either.

so it's for absolute fact, that we are definitely picking one of those two? You know this for a fact?

I wasn't referring to anything but "interest" in these players being somewhat of an absolute.

Nobody knows what's going down on draft day except for the Rams.

I wouldn't even begin to presume to know with any certainty who anyone is picking,  much less Getty.

On an off note,  I did figure with almost certainty that Star was going to be a Panther at about pick 9 though (LOL).

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
