NY Post-Panthers best drafting team last 5 drafts

Outside of Cam our 2011 draft was horribly bad.  But I guess he alone kind of makes up for it.  Getting a franchise QB is about the most important thing a team can do.  Getting an MVP-level quarterback is obviously even better.

Wasn't that entire draft already off the team the following season aside from Cam and Fua?  And Fua was his own special kind of bad, yet he actually managed to stick around for a while... though he shouldn't have.  It's just that we were paper thin at DT at the time.

2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 are all looking like some pretty nice drafts though.  If Big Frank can lay off the grass I still think he can be a pretty decent DE.

Including the UDFAs from 2014... that class was about as close as you can get to nailing the draft/UDFA signings.  Kelvin Benjamin, Kony Ealy, Trai Turner, Bene Benwikere, Tre Boston, Andrew Norwell, Philly Brown, etc.

And honestly, it's thanks to Hurney for having the balls of steel to draft him first overall.

I know that's a difficult thing to admit for some of the folks with selective memories here about our last GM. But it's the truth.

Yeah, he was money when picking in the top 10.

Nevermind that the rest of that draft class didn't last 3 seasons.

think of it like you're driving to myrtle beach.  you're ready to go put away some colt 45 tall boys, yell at girls to take off their tops, and get sun poisoning.  you're already wasted though so you have the choice of marty hurney or dave gettleman driving you.

hurney jumps in your 90s hatchback with a korn sticker on the back window and floors it for ten miles weaving effortlessly through traffic like he picked up an invincibility power up in a video game.  then he slams on the brakes and does 25 under for the next fifty miles.  then the process repeats again.  you may never get there but it's impressive to see him in the zone on the rare occasion that he visits it.

dave gettleman snaps his fannypack on and does the speed limit as a baseline.  when there are no cops around he'll do 15 or 20 over on certain open stretches of highway.  it's a lot less exciting but odds are you're going to get where you're going in a predictable fashion.

Not just top 10, pretty much all of his 1st round picks were amazing. Unfortunately none of the other rounds were.

No one will fault Hurney for the things he did right. Its the other 90% that ruins him.

You're absolutely right obviously.

But it's still interesting looking at all the variables that led to us drafting Newton.

Change a few things around, good or bad, and we might still be searching for a QB even today.

Thank you Jimmy Clausen.

There was an awesome article a year or so about teams tanking in the NBA and how it really never leads to anything.

The Panthers got oddly luck with not just getting Cam but being in the position to do so in the right year.

With the core in place and a cap oasis soon coming, we might have a run like the Patriots for a long time.
