Norman was not a production of a system

what's the reason for this decision

This here is what we all want to know. The ideal scenario was having Josh tagged for a year and just letting him walk next season, resigning all of our necessary long term players, and having an elite shutdown CB who, as the OP mentioned, did a lot more for this team schematically than people are giving him credit for, for an additional season. Perhaps you could hope his value would slip and you would get a good CB at a better rate, if that's your cup of tea.

The best explanation I've been able to muster so far is that Dave was getting flustered as we got closer to the draft about a shortage of picks, and made a move to ensure we had more next year. Which I think we'd all agree would be silly, given the disparity in value between an elite CB and a mid round pick. Idk if that's what happened. But its the only thing I could think up. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with the power of friendship or whatever goofy line people cook up about Josh in "the locker room."

The reason is having a player that everyone knew was going to leave to the highest bidding team at the end of the season is bad for team chemistry

Yeah this is what I meant.

This is a typical example of when Playet X leaves home team, highly emotional fans try to downplay his importance so they can sleep better at night. Norman was the best corner in the league last year and it got to his head. Of course team mates helped him out, that's what team mates do, even for great players.

And emo kids get on here and complain for months on end like it makes any difference before disappearing when the team is doing well. They are literally only here to complain.  I don't know if it a product of sociology or psychology but it weird.

Norman is good......but  we just don't put much value on secondary players.        It's not a knock on Norman.  I don't believe  we'd open the purse strings for any CB.       Our focus is in our front 7.

Get solid DE play on the other side of Ealy,  and our defense will take another step forward.    If Shaq continues to develop,   you could add that in there also,   and our defense will take two steps forward.

Most of our defenses money though,  will always go to fortifying our front 7.  It will never go into a secondary.  imo.

what is the goal of all of these threads!? who gives a poo whether josh specifically was a product of a system or not? the fact is, we have a system here-- like every team in the NFL-- and ours happens to be pretty good. so good that we have been in the playoffs three years in a row with a variety of rookies, unprovens, old vets, and josh norman. josh was good in our system and can probably be good in the redskins system, but his talent has required a ton of discipline to make him produce in the system. if he doesn't do well in DC it'll be because guys like Wilks aren't there to keep him between the lines.

we will have players filling josh's position this season and somebody is gonna have some good games at some point and maybe you'll even be surprised. this team runs on unproven players doing what josh did. we have the infrastructure--team captains--and then we have the new guys who come in. because of his age josh was probably not considered part of the infrastructure. sometimes when you're feeding the fire some of the coals are gonna have diamonds inside.

josh was frustrating here and then great last year. i acknowledge he is now a great player. however i no longer give a fug about him because he is no longer on our team. whether or not taking more money is a reasonable thing to do, the fact is that at some level he chose to leave. doesn't have to be a malicious reason, but it still is a reason. when you chose to leave then you aren't welcome in my book. as a fan of the PANTHERS and no single player, he is now an enemy and can get fuged and trucked by us and the rest of the league.

go fug yourself if you wanna sit here on a board of a team you ostensibly are a fan of and tell all of us how much our super bowl team sucks now and how we should all be worried. talk poo about the best GM this team has ever had and the guy who can actually put a team together and make the moves no one else wants to have to. people on this board said congrats and goodbye to josh, but he doesn't deserve much more than that from any panthers fan. if you wanna keep showering him with praise then maybe you should go to a redskins board and gush about how great he is and share your insight from your all 22 camera subscription.

the fact that you wanna be spiteful at the expense of your own team is sad. it shows you probably aren't really that great of a fan and are more interested in being right or just really love josh norman. thanks, but GTFO.

That line in 2003 was leaps and bounds better than the current

I'll agree with you there, however we have a better group of LBs now than we did then.  Either way, i think with our overall front 7 (assuming we draft pass rush help), I think we'll be fine without Josh back there.

At least that's how I'm looking at it.

this isn't a binary.

josh's eliteness and our defense's eliteness are not mutually contingent.

josh will look a little worse without us. we will look a little worse without him. ultimately both sides had to do what they had to do, and now we can focus on replacing him.

we'll be alright

The defense will be better this year. Not because Norman is gone but because the unit itself will be better overall. It's  team game. Shaq will be better, Short will be better, the Star and Soliai will be monsters in the run game. Coleman has another year in the system. Bene will have grown. Boykin is  great addition. Ealy will be inproved.  Johnson, if he stays healthy will have a better year. Luke will be Luke + and TD will still be TD. There will be draft and other FA pickups as well.

Nope I'm just disproving myths, meanwhile everyone else is bringing up the money side, since they have no counter argument for this whole system thing. Have you ever even watched a second of game tape?

You know gooby. If you didn't come off as a whiny pissed off 12 year old, people might actual, you know, listen to your thoughts. Food for thought.

It didn't limit sht, your pulling these statements out of your ass. Even after we tagged Norman we had more than enough cap space to sign who ever we wanted this and next year.

Your just a knob slobber trying to make reason out of a stupid decision.

And there you go again. Cursing and throwing slurs at folks is one sure fire way to get them to listen.

Also, if we tagged Josh, we would have had about 18mil left. Stah, and Short, alone would eat that up. We wouldn't of had any money to sign anyone else. That argument does not hold water.

Then we have to sign KB, Ealy, Trai, Norwell, Shaq, Fun Fun, and Bene'. So yeah, that 14mil we saved from Josh will go a long way in keeping our core together. But keep on hating that Josh is gone. That ONE player doomed our whole future. Never to see a SuperB owl again we are.

Oh, and in your haste to post this thread bashing the Panthers for letting Josh get away. You OP was really really difficult to read. Slow your roll down, and make a coherent statement. Maybe that will up your cred.
