Jaguars havent even been seen in the US in decades. Cougars and leopards-both of which can be black-have been.

 

Edit:  apparently there's never been a confirmed black cougar sightings in the US but it does have a bit of a chupacabra like lore in the Carolinas which tethers our mascot to the creature a bit, even if its retroactively

I don't believe that there has been any validated scientific evidence that there have been any panthers other than jaguars or leopards.

I've never seen black cougars, but I have seen dark gray.  I grew up in Ashe Co. NC, and our property was part of a huge male's territory.  He was a big charcoal colored sum bitch.
