@Panthers, you realize the black panther is technically not even its own species.

But black goes with anything, while apparently those spots are keeping the Jags out of the SB.

Jaguars havent even been seen in the US in decades. Cougars and leopards-both of which can be black-have been.

 

Edit:  apparently there's never been a confirmed black cougar sightings in the US but it does have a bit of a chupacabra like lore in the Carolinas which tethers our mascot to the creature a bit, even if its retroactively

I don't believe that there has been any validated scientific evidence that there have been any panthers other than jaguars or leopards.

I've never seen black cougars, but I have seen dark gray.  I grew up in Ashe Co. NC, and our property was part of a huge male's territory.  He was a big charcoal colored sum bitch.
