I love Josh, but, realistically, his value on this team is maxed out at about 7 million

And that's just about all I would offer him. Now Gettleman may have made the deal a little sweeter at 10-11 million, but, schematically, this team doesn't need to pay any player 16 million per year to cover a zone. Josh was really good here because his athleticism combined with his ball skills shined in our scheme, and we're gonna have to find that same skill set to get the replacement value.

But 16 million a year was never going to happen. Why would we pay Norman more than Luke simply for playing really well? Luke doesn't get 16 million a year himself and has a lot more responsibility. Same thing with Hardy. He tried to leverage his way into big money and, well, he fuged up, but even before that Gettleman offered him an extension that was something like 8 million per year.

I know there are people up in arms about what Gettleman is doing but consider this. In 2013, Rob C. left and everybody said we needed Hue Jackson, or somebody that had OC experience. We promoted Shula and everybody went mad. Then the team got its first playoff berth since 2008. The next year, we released Steve Smith and everybody flipped a poo. That year the panthers won their first playoff game since 2005-2006. Now this last year the team said goodbye to one of the most popular players on this board, DeAngelo Williams, and the Panthers ended up going to the Super Bowl after a lot of grief had been plastered on this forum.

So just remember, when building a roster, Gettleman knows a player's value better than anyone else. In the league. On ESPN. On this forum. Except for me. Because I just said it.

When I sit down and think about this, I feel actually good about it. I look at it like we rented J. Pep that year. I actually think a lot of players gained respect for Gettleman. He was not going to hold Norman or the Panthers back. No use paying someone who's not going to be there next year. Just go ahead and get it out of the way.

And one more thing:  Josh had not signed the Tag yet...and it was possible he was not going too.  I think the Panthers feared a hold-out and a distraction.

Also, I have to imagine that the rest of the team was not thrilled about hearing how great he thinks he is when there were 10 other players on the field.  Players which includes a potential future HOF in Luke along with one of the best LB in the game TD, and a very dominant KK just to name a few.  Josh seems like a good kid that got caught up in his success.  The team is more important than one player.  The Panthers will miss Josh, but he is replaceable.

People keep comparing him to Johnson, it's no where close to the same situation.  Johnson has already gotten a ton of money from the Panthers.  His nickname for years has been "Big Money".  Him signing to a team friendly deal was the LEAST he could do after the contract he had.  Norman hasn't made his big bucks yet.  He deserves a nice contract, but thinking he's on Revis's level is unrealistic.  Revis has been doing it consistently since 2009.  Took Norman years to develop and plays in a system based zone defense to top it off.  The Panthers know his worth, Norman doesn't.  It'd be perfect if he went to the Redskins and got torched on a regular basis.  He's a great player in Carolina's system, but he'll be exposed on the wrong team.

The only way for sure we can measure Josh Norman's value is if we go into the season without him and see if we still dominate with backup/random/drafted corners or if we start letting WRs fug us like they did a few years ago.

This "not paying him more than Luke" game is entirely irrelevant.  Different positions, different positional value.  Can't compare them.  Doesn't matter if Luke is more valuable to the team.  If Hardy hadn't got involved with the wrong chick, his contract with the Panthers would have blown Luke's out of the water.  BECAUSE HE PLAYS A MORE IMPORTANT POSITION.

Hell, I believe Shorts going to make more than Luke.

I respect the TS opinion, but I feel Josh is worth more than 7 milli. He's not worth the 16 he was asking for, but if I was GM I'd offer around 9-10 milli

KK's gonna make a LOT more than Luke.

So now we just take the saved 14 million and sign two corners (that are not as good as Josh, but will do as well in our system) at 7 each?

See my point? We both knew there are no such corners available, and as we really have no good sorry term way to spend the extra cap anywhere (as no worthy free agents are still available) we are not better off as far as our chances for the superb owl 51 goes.
