I agree with you, except that I also think it sends the message to know your value to the team.  Dave will set the ceiling of what he thinks your worth, and will not budge.

Yeah, I think Gettleman has shown that he'll give guys fair market value and isn't afraid to spend.  He gave Cam and Luke big deals and word is that he was willing to give Norman $10M+ per season which is good money for a zone CB.  But, if you're trying to break the bank and get the absolute max you can get, that's probably not gonna happen here.  Especially if you play a position that he doesn't value as highly as some others do in the league.

Bottom line is that if you want Revis money at CB, you need to be a lockdown man cover guy.  That's not what Josh is, at least not for us anyway.  You can't spend $16M a year on a zone CB.

Guys, I'm telling you, there was no overall message sent with this other than Dave isn't going to spend huge money for DBs.  If this was Cam or an elite pass rusher, this would've been handled differently.  We have some hogmollies coming up for new deals and once Dave saw how far apart the two sides were he decided to use that $14M to lock up guys at positions he values more highly rather than keep that money tied up in a one year rental on a guy who plays a position he doesn't value as highly.  It's pretty much that simple.

you are correct my friend.  yet people claim we "fuged up" lol.

And at the same time it's not his fault that we don't use him that way. Rivera has a system for a long time he likes to stick to, josh got benched for a long time for not doing what he was told. He just follows the responsibilites he is given. He would probably welcome the challenge knowing him.

eh, if I don't run a man scheme....the best man to man cover corner in the game doesn't really matter to me.  We have seen great man to man cover corners go to a zone scheme and suck.

If you do X great, then you should be paid great.   If you team doesn't do Y then does it really matter how well you do Y?

Look at Cam, ask Cam to implement a Tom Brady gameplan and likely is then below average.  Why does that matter though?

It says we ain't that limp-dick Panthers team. Not anymore.

With hurney there was certainly a sense that we would overpay. Part of that was institutional.

If I had it in me I could write a book on hurney. He had this massive inferiority complex that probably came from his path to the nfl. He felt that since the panthers were a smaller market team, they had to keep their own at all costs.

Furthermore, to send a message to future draft picks to motivate them, since if you did well the panthers would do you better than any other team. See the gross and gamble contracts. Ignore the post holdout bonanza because that was something else.

The main problem was two fold: hurney trusted his gut too much, and he was very bad at structuring contracts.

Gettleman has done the exact opposite, possibly even going too far as he did with Steve smith.

@electro's horse from who you talked to, do you think the lines of communication are still open?

This info combined with the news that he replaced his agent make me think he is wants to re-explore his chances of coming back here.  But, as you said, if all he wanted was to be here (and get a significant raise), then having your offer yanked off the table and hear rumblings that the FO didn't think you are worth what you think...  that has got to be a blow to the ego.

He'll have to kiss the ring.

I get the sense a reconciliation is impossible.

But that's just my own interpretation.

Except we did fug up. 24 hours ago we had the most talented and complete roster in the league with a pro bowler at every position. Now we have a pretty glaring weakness and no longer have Hardy or a prime CJ to hide it.

Whether we want to believe it or not, we had all the leverage. Josh could threaten to hold out but deep inside he knows he can't sit out a whole year and expect to get a good contract as a 30 year old cornerback who hadnt played a game in over a year.
