I'm thinking free agent signings are going to be a very rare occurrence while Gettleman is running the show. Especially signing any guys in their prime.

Agree, especially since we already are having to let some of our own stars walk since we can't afford them all.

Unless there's a "position emergency" due to injury, or some player just totally failing to play as expected, the priority is going to go to:

1) drafting well and developing our draft picks & UDFAs,

2) re-signing our own guys,

3) occasionally adding a few "scrap heap" type guys, or cheap vets who still have something left to help fill a few holes and/or set us up for the draft each year.

It's not that we couldn't afford JNo, we simply chose not to (at 15 mil APY).  Smart, especially at his age and position.  He was never a GMan guy to boot.

You are seriously wasting your time with this. Gman is trying to figure out how to keep our own guys right now, especially the d-lineman (KK and Star). Adding a safety at $12 million/year runs contrary to just about everything he's preached since arriving in Carolina.

Message boards, generally speaking, are a waste of time.  I don't disagree with much of what you said, but maybe GMan considers the baseline created by Harrison Smith less absurd than Fletcher Cox, even if he prefers the DT position and keeping his own.  Maybe KK insists on the Cox number and Berry is more flexible as it relates to the Smith number.

GMan probably doesn't like spending big at RB but didn't have a choice.  Maybe when JStew's salary is dumped eventually he'd love to spend on a premier, experienced safety for our young secondary.  Maybe we can have both at the expense of something else.  Vernon Bulter adds an extra x-factor into the mix.  It's a "liquid/fluid"(GMan terms) situation that is worth noting is all.

July 15 is put up/shut up time with Berry btw.

Pretty much.

Our prior leaders were willing to part with first round picks. Our current one... not so much.

Ugh.

2 first rounders for gilbert.

1 first rounder to trade into the late first to get otah.

1 first rounder to trade into the second and take everett brown.

A second rounder that turned out to be 33 overall to get armanti edwards.

I hope we never trade up again.

Devil's Advocate only-

Gilbert and Otah were lazy bums, Berry is a bonafide badass.  Not much more needs to be said about that.

That player at 33, Ras I Dowling, was on our team last year after all!  PS-still HATE the trade, just saying.

After the events of recent weeks, an even better argument could be made to draft the premier positions in the early rounds so THEY can play on the rookie wage scale as we've done (KK, Kony, Star, Vernon, Bradberry (?) (even KB and Funch with WR having a far greater average 2nd contract than safety)), and splurge on the other positions in FA/trades, giving the overall team more bang for the buck.
