Dude nearly had his head taken off out there on the field by Beckham Jr last year. And for what? Nothing, because the guy was mad at him.

You never know when your time is up in this league. But I guess it's just easier for feeble minds to call him "greedy" than to actually attempt to comprehend deep intellectual thought that goes beyond the neanderthal fan mindset of "ME GET DRUNK, YOU PLAY FOOTBALL NOW!".

C'mon bro, I get it, I really do, but he could live like a king for 14 mil for one season.

If you won the lotto and had 14 mil net, you'll be mad about being taxed, but u still got 14 mil.

Once the tag is rescinded, can we place him under the franchise tag again if he decides he does want to come back? I was prepared for him to leave after the season, but I don't want to see him go like this.

I know it's highly unlikely, but I hope he comes back...for atleast one more year so he can make this run with us

Great post man, and i agree with pretty much everything, but i wanted to touch on one very big point...  you mentioned the contract situation started last offseason, and that's key.  Sure, we did engage in discussions then, but Josh bet on himself and he won - and so did we as a result.  He played his heart out and his ass off and helped us reach the Superbowl.  So, as far as his contract situation, his bet paid off and he shoukd reap the rewards.

I'm not saying he should be the highest paid corner in the game, but i think top 7 would be fair.  And he has earned it.  That's not being greedy, imo.

And GMan's move here is just ridiculous and is, much like the situation with Smitty, all about pride.  I say this because the other big point that should be focused on here was that the tag we placed on Josh was non-exclusive, so he was already able to negotiate with other teams.  This wasn't about allowing him to now go explore other offers...  we removed any and all leverage we had in neogtiations simply so GMan could say, "you're not worth it, f*** you."  Just seems very petty and unprofessional.

I agree with everything except the last paragraph. We'll never find out what happened behind closed doors. For that reason, I can't agree with that

Gettleman clearly has a plan and he's sticking to it.  He simply doesn't value the CB position enough to spend the kind of money it would have taken to keep Josh around.  The franchise will be better for it over the long haul.

Hate for Josh and the team in the short term.  He's the kind of character that makes it fun to be a fan, really easy to pull for but his stance throughout the contract talks backed Gettleman in a corner.  Gettleman was going to avoid distractions at any cost.  Not to mention that his agent was naive and really did him no favors in the negotiations.

Wish him well but there is virtually no chance he returns to Carolina.

I think the deal with that is that other teams would be negotiating with him under the assumption they'd ALSO have to compensate us in some fashion, thereby lowering the amount of money they'd be willing to give him (assumably).  His agent could have very well been telling Gettleman "the offers we're getting aren't true indicators of his value because teams don't wanna pay full value AND have to give you guys draft picks", so Gettleman removed that obstacle to allow him to get a true estimate of his value.

Sign the damn franchise and play!

Negotiate after. If it happens it will. Norman wanted a deal now that will make him the highest paid corner. Ain't gonna happen bruh.

He was already gonna get paid more than Luke next season if he just sign the damn franchise.

It's not as simple as "just sign the tender durrr".  Not signing the tender yet allowed him to continue to negotiate with other teams.  If he signed it, that option was over.  He was going to sign the tender when the time came, definitely before the regular season.

Well, unless you've had someone intentionally try to maim you on a football field. No, you don't get it.

You're not looking at this from his perspective.

$14 million in one season if he has a potentially career ending injury, and potential health problems the rest of his life at 29 years old versus a 3-4 year long term deal. Whether you like it or not, that is the approach players take. It can all change in an instant. That's just the ugly truth about this sport. In the end, fans don't give a poo, as long as they get their precious fantasy points. Some other player will take their place.

Nope - he's an FA now. No official ties to or contractual obligations between him and Carolina.

like KSpan said above, no.  To clarify, the deadline for franchise tenders has passed.

If that's the case, then why are y'all bittching like DG screwed him over. He was allows this whole time to negotiate with 31 other teams.

I'm not bitching about anyone screwing anyone over.  I'm merely lamenting the outcome.  Like I said before, both Gettleman and Josh are both right about their opinions of his worth.  Josh is worth $16mil+ on the open market, but he's not worth that much to us.  I had hoped he would sign with us for less than his worth, but don't blame him one bit for not doing so.

Norman was "allowed" to negotiate with other teams, but in the event that happened, and we declined to match the offer made, that team would have had to give us 2 first round picks.

No team was going to take the chance of giving that up. Not even for Norman. The only player any team would be willing to do that for is a sure fire franchise quarterback.

So no Chuck, he was not going to negotiate with any other teams under those circumstances.

According to a CBS article, Josh's agent said he hadn't even been in talks at all with Gettleman recently and this was completely out of the blue. Also Josh was at apparently at a funeral today so I'm sure he's not in the mood to talk about this.

your post makes no sense.  He was going to play 1 year for 14 million.

Then why didn't he sign the franchise tender?

He was only hold off signing his tender for a while, he wasn't going to sit out the gd season.

Please provide the quote from he and his agent where he said that he wouldn't sit out the season.  Didn't he also say at first that he wouldn't skip offseason workouts? How did that work out, by the way?

Personally, I think there was every indication given to Gettleman by Norman's team that holding out was a legitimate option.
