Panthers rescind Norman's franchise tag...

The decision to rescind the franchise tag from cornerback Josh Norman could be viewed as a ploy by the Panthers to sign him to a long-term deal based on the current market for his services, since the current market for the services of a 28-year-old cornerback (29 in December) may be a lot less than what his $13.95 million tender would have paid in 2016.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, however, Carolina’s plan — as reflected by G.M. Dave Gettleman wishing Norman well in the statement announcing the move — is to not re-sign Norman.

Panther's short changed him two offseasons in a row and never truely gave him a serious offer this offseason.

It was to the point that Josh started acting this way because him and the agent felt Panthers weren't serious in negotiations and he flat said he wouldn't sign it till they were.

They never were interested and well here we are.

This is wrong IMO. Josh played half a decent season two years ago but still made a lot of boneheaded plays. He was an All-Pro last year but the request for money he was making wasn't a reasonable amount.

Getltleman tagged him hoping to get a deal done. When it became abundantly clear that Norman's asking point wasn't a negotiating point, but rather a hard number, Gettleman rescinded the tag.

Also, only a handful of teams can even sign Norman at this point. So really he could wait and see what Josh gets on the open market with far less suitors and maybe Norman comes back or Gettleman will be comfortable with him being gone.

Either way I trust Gettleman completely and will not question his methods until I'm given a reason to. This isn't a reason to.

Edit: meant to say he played half decent two seasons ago, not last year, where I cited him being an all pro.

If a player sniffs around an offer of $13 million for a season's work and then acts like he is offended by it, he'll play like he was offended for the whole season. Rarely does one ever play up to their full potential under a franchise tag... the closest anyone has done it here was with Jordan Gross (I believe he was tagged, right?)

Better to give JNo his freedom before the draft so he can find a new home with one of those teams with deep, deep pockets. It will give him the payday and screw up some folks' draft boards. Hope he looks good wearing Jacksonville's colors.

We'll survive. Last year, they said we were sunk because we had nobodies playing at WR. We went to the Super Bowl. We'll make the DBs work.

Somehow.

Regardless, this thread is going to be an interesting one to visit come December depending on how our secondary performs.

Might be quite a few tune changes.

For two years 99% of this board wanted every washed up butthole WR available. I kept saying Gettleman is the man and is going to be just fine.

Norman wanted way to much period. Negotiations weren't going well. Gettleman said bye. No hard feelings, just real life.

The team will be fine.

Not sure why you singled out my post, but I'm not in sky is falling mode or anything absurd like that.

I think it's in the middle. Way too early to tell how this will impact us, but I'm not going to bury my head in the sand and pretend to know we will be just as good in the secondary or better until the next several months have played out. We've seen many highs and lows as Panthers fans, and if it has taught me anything, what you think might happen does not always play out that way. I'm just gonna let it ride.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
