CBSSports - Panthers on the clock

When the NFL Draft begins first-round selections in Chicago on April 28, the Carolina Panthers have the No. 30 pick in the first round.

It was obvious in the Super Bowl 50 loss that quarterback Cam Newton needs some blocking up front to allow him time to lift the passing game higher than 24th in the league.

Here is an in-depth look at the team's needs, offseason changes, potential best fit and the selections by NFLDraftScout.com's experts.

Who would you pick and why?

FACTS AND STATS

  • First pick in 2016 draft: No. 30 overall.
  • 2015 Finish: First in NFC South
  • Record: 15-1, 2-1, lost Super Bowl
  • Total offense: 366.9 (11th)
  • Rushing: 142.6 (2nd)
  • Passing: 224.3 (24th)
  • Total defense: 322.9 (6th)
  • Rushing: 88.4 (4th)
  • Passing: 234.5 (11th)

TEAM NEEDS

Tackle: Michael Oher and Mike Remmers held up well for most of last season, but they were liabilities in the Super Bowl. One game won't make the Panthers panic, but they need a young guy they can groom.

Defensive tackle: Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei are one of the top duos in the league and Paul Soliai and Kyle Love provide good depth, but this draft is loaded with talent at defensive tackle. Drafting one could help them save money instead of spending big bucks on both Short and Lotulelei.

Defensive end: Kony Ealy starred in the Super Bowl, but Charles Johnson is about to turn 30 and behind those two is inexperienced talent. The Panthers can plan for the future of their pass rush by grabbing one or two ends in a draft deep with them.

Cornerback: This could be Josh Norman's final year in Carolina, and across from him, Bene' Benwikere will be coming off a broken leg that ended his season in Week 14. General manager Dave Gettleman doesn't spend much capital at corner, but the Panthers need help there.
