Gettleman's 1st round options

The discussion is how much should analytics and human scouting should count? 50/50?, 55/45? Or 60/40? Brown's have come out and stated they are 60 analytics and 40 scouting......

You need both, but both make mistakes.....BIG mistakes.

Soultion is confirmed by both parties- get more draft picks, so you have a higher the chance of getting it right.

Ifedi is the only one that we've brought in that would even remotely get playing time in year 1 in theory.  An immediate upgrade on the line involves calling Cleveland or San Fran and working out a deal for Joe Thomas or Joe Staley.  Not impossible at all but simply unlikely.  The draft, as it pertains to OL, is 2017 and beyond thinking.

That would be nice...call DG!!

Ding, ding, ding. Looking at meetings and obvious positions where we need big time players those are the guys. I would also throw in Butler there too, just because we have spent a lot of time with him. I just don't think Butler meets a need.

Butler is a guy that I like a lot. He has some great athletic traits for a guy his size!!! Maybe DG has a 1st rd grade on him and moves up in the 2nd to grab him. Hell for all I know DG drafts a C or G in the 1st and then snags another WR in the 2nd...wait never mind it's DG he wouldn't do that.

I'd put the 49ers and Browns over/under wins at 4 games....combined.  Certainly either guy being moved for cheap, young labor and at a minimum a second day pick may be appealing.  We, ironically, are the obvious contender that has all our picks but Rd 6, cap space to endure a deal, and no "franchise" LT.  Move Oher to the right with Remmers/Williams as depth and voilà, the best OL in football by miles.

There are cons-for Cleveland and San Fran, the possibility their GM's may face conspiracy to commit murder charges on their poor QBs that already have no supporting casts.  And for us, the long term repercussions of giving up a high pick and taking on that fair for LT but expensive nonetheless salary.

Stay tuned though.  The draft is the best reality TV and you never know.

7. DJ Campbell- garbage can

5.Cameron Artis Payne- like no snaps

5.Mayo- like nah snaps

5. Josh Norman- Pro bowler this year

6.Gaffney- Somewhere else

6.Barner- Somewhere else

5.Bene- He dat deal....ohhhh wee mayne

4.Kugbila- Disabled, never played a game.

4.Boston- Prominent back up

4. Frank Alexander- hmmmmm

4. Joe Adams- Ohhhhh

you see we don't actually do a great job drafting after round 3, in fact nobody does, other teams cuts, and UDFA can fill out the bottom of your roster and even start in some cases. Guys like Norwell and Philly have outperformed oh 70% of our draft picks after the 3rd Rd. The guys that you listed that could have been upgraded is laughable. Your #6 DE Delaire had 3 sacks. TE 3's don't get playing time, we can get a better gunner than Teddy, I'll give you that. Wegher and Marlowe? Also no jersey, you gonna upgrade a guy who stands on the sideline? He look better in sweats?

Thumbs up

Interesting discussion re:draft strategy.  Thanks y'all.

I don't have a strong opinion on the quantity vs. quality argument.    It does seem like we've looked at quite a lot of guys who could be there mid second-round, thus possibly suggesting a trade up, but I'm not sure it's really going to happen.  Last year we had those comp picks.  This year with only 6 picks to start with, I predict DG will be less active on the trading.

I like that DG makes the moves he thinks best in free agency without giving over much thought to comp picks, but getting an extra 2 picks, especially a second 3rd round pick does do much to enhance one's draft capital.  I wonder if we'll see DG start to manage more with an eye towards comp picks in the future to give him some more draft picks.

I really want Sheppard.

Sheppard, Dodd, Cua, or one of the Henrys and I'll be really happy. Won't complain if Gettleman goes in another direction, though. I'll just do my usual, turn the tv off and go to bed slightly miffed thing haha.

I really like the list of picks that could be there late in the 1st.  It's very hard to choose among some very exciting players.  I seriously could see Gettleman trading up to pick early in the 2nd to snag a second one of these guys.

trade what? the rest of carolinas picks isnt enough to move up to the top of the 2nd round.

We got to 41 from 57 last year with a 2nd, 3rd and 6th.

We could get to the mid 40's with a similar package this year if Gettleman wanted to move up again.

it would take every pick they have left to get up to maybe 44-45. which is very far from the top and any chance of landing a 1st round talent as suggested by KB.

1st round talent is subjective and one of those listed that KB refers to could very well fall to the mid to late 40s. According to Gettleman, we got players he graded as 1st rounders in Short(44th), Kony(60th), and Funchess(41st) in the 2nd round every year he has been here. Of course, I'm pretty sure every GM says their 2nd round pick was graded as a 1st round talent every year so you probably want to take that with a grain of salt. I do not advocate trading up, I'm very against it, but the possibility to package our 2nd and 3rd plus maybe another pick to move up 10-15 spots to get a guy a guy Gettleman has as a 1st round player that's available is not out of the realm of possibility.

When I wrote about trading up to the low-mid 40s, I was thinking it might only cost our 2nd and 3rd.  Now that I've looked at trade values, and given our lack of comp picks this year, my expectations of a trade up in the second are lower.  But there are some guys that might be available who could be very very good fits for us, so we'll see.

We know Getts views draft picks like gold.  I think having comp picks last year was a big factor in our trading up for Funch.  Given how few roster holes we have, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Gettleman will trade up again this year, but I'm less sold on it now than I was....

Especially with such a HUGE # of our players eligible for free agency next year, this might not be the year Getts wants to skimp on draft picks, especially since we're only starting with 6 to begin with.
