INTERESTING NOTE:Gettleman has 1st rounders in for a pre draft visit. (self.panthers)

submitted 12 hours ago by BananaGooP

In every year that Dave Gettleman has been the GM he has had the player he picks in the first round in for a pre-draft visit. In 2015 he had Shaq Thompson and D.J. Humphries in.(Humphries would have been the pick if Arizona had not picked him first) In 2014 he had Kelvin Benjamin, Kony Ealy and Corey(Philly) Brown in for pre draft visits. In 2013 he had Kawann Short in, and 2 unnamed players. I would wager a good amount of money that one of those 2 unnamed was Star.

Because of this it is likely that their 2016 pick has already been in for a visit. We can eliminate all players who have not met with Carolina for a workout of private meeting because everything else is not "official." Next we can eliminate players who are clearly not first rounders. There is a handful of prospects who are likely second round picks on this list, but they are not clearly out of the first round and therefore should be included. The STMs are likely private meetings or workouts. I also believe Shepard has been in for a visit. Now here is the list:

  • Vonn Bell, S, Ohio State (STM)
  • Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh (COM, WOR)
  • Vernon Butler, DT/NT, Louisiana Tech (SR, WOR, PRI)
  • Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor (STM)
  • Su'a Cravens, OLB, USC (STM)
  • Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson (PRI)
  • Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama (STM, PRI)
  • Germain Ifedi, OT, Texas A&M (COM, PRI, WOR)
  • Jayron Kearse, S, Clemson (STM)
  • Shaq Lawson, DE/3-4OLB, Clemson (PRI, WOR)
  • Emmanuel Ogbah, DE/3-4DE, Oklahoma State (WOR)
  • Jarran Reed, DT/3-4DE/NT, Alabama (WOR, PRI)
  • A'Shawn Robinson, DT/3-4DE/NT, Alabama (PRI)
  • Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma (COM)
  • Darian Thompson, S, Boise State (PRI, WOR)

From this list my bet would be IF Lawson, Ogbah, Robinson or Coleman fall they will be picked up and outside of that I would say it is likely Su'a Cravens, Vonn Bell, or Germain Ifedi.

Looking at this list, Boyd, Kearse, Bell and Thompson are not 1st round talents. And Robinson will certainly be gone the time we pick.

Unless you know what players are 1st round grade by Gettleman this list is partially incomplete

Now, 1 and probably 2 of those DE will be gone at 30. Let's assume it's Lawson.

We're left with these options.

Of that list, I'd take Coleman or Shepard and not think twice about it.  Outside of WR, I'd think hard about Butler.  I think we'll draft our safety in the second round.

ifedi is a second rounder in my opinion, and Gman not likely to take Olineman in the first

DE's, in my mind are the most likely target, second round might see us moving up for a DT is a first round grade guy falls far enough

    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
