Prom Time for 89

top dawg

Smitty is in the news again, but this time it is totally cool. He has asked Aubrey Bridges, a Charlotte area teen with Autism to the prom.

Of course Bridges replied in the affirmative.

Dawg, you say it correctly---the article (second link) calls the girl an "autistic teenager".  That is incorrect phrasing that is a bit insulting to the people with autism.  NEVER refer to the disease before the person.  An informed columnist would have called her a teenager with autism or something of that nature.

Having said that, Smitty is a polarizing figure, is he not?  He always does the right thing, but can be such a complete goober head at other times.  Regardless, this is so cool.

Smitty does good for the community - thread gets 4-5 replies

Smitty says something that can be twisted into hatred - everyone loses their minds...

I still love that dude, and he will always represent the Carolina Panthers in my mind... He needs a statue, and I wish he were still here this year to get his ring...

There isn't a whole lot to respond to in a thread like this. You just give a "oh that's cool" and move on. Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows smitty does some great charitable work.

I wish Smitty had been here as well, and though some may not want to hear it, I will always have some haunting feelings of what could have been. Sure people will argue about whether his absence was actually a good thing regarding chemistry and Cam's development, but the fact is that he was a Panther for over a decade, and it worked! He wasn't "done" or washed up like was exclaimed by more than a few Huddlers, and even suggested by Gettleman himself.

He is a pretty good dude overall that you have to give time to get to know, lest he be usunderstood. But, he hasn't been a choir boy as a teammate by any stretch of the imagination. It's notably different from what he has been as a family man and member of the community. But that's probably what has made Smitty, 'The Little Engine That Could', such an amazing competitor.

When you judge the good versus the bad when viewing Steve Smith's bigger picture, the good outdistances the missteps by a mile.
