Huddle Workout Warriors Part deux

Old thread got archived so figured I'd start a new one for relevant workout discussions.

Any other runners/tri-athletes in the crowed?  After taking 3 months off running to rest a slight right knee injury, and a solid month returning running/biking to I've began my 70.3 ironman training in earnest. But so far I seem to not be making any head way from where I started a month ago. right knee still seems to be bothering me a bit while running. but not enough to stop or really slow me down. but I'm conscious of it not feeling 100% while I run.  My stamina just isn't there when running, I struggled today to finish a 3 mile run on a 10min/mile pace, which is something I would have laughed at just before my knee injury. This time last year I was 8min/mile pace, while running 5-6 miles 3-4 times a week.

I was wondering if I have just been running or biking too much, but my legs are just fine when biking. and there I have made noticeable improvements over a month when I started out just biking 20 miles/ride, and now I'm riding 30-40 miles and have boosted my MPH average by .4. So I'm making noticeable improvements on my bike but none while running....  would also think some of the endurance from the biking would carry over to running and yet I've seen none.  I have recently tried adding more carbs to my diet to see if that helps some. but still.

The surgery and follow-up rehab may have possibly changed your running motion. You will compensate and not realize it.

It sounds dumb and I can't speak on it, but maybe try running barefoot for a while to reset your running motion.

I ran the Charlotte marathon and I'm currently training for a half marathon in June.  When you start back running you have to take it slow.  2 days a week to start until it becomes less painful.  Do not stress out over your time it will get better as you become stronger but you have to take resting and stretching seriously.  Also if at all possible ice any aches and pains for 20-30 mins after each run.  Oh and running bare foot is not a good idea at all unless you are an elite runner.  It was really just a fad because some guy wrote a book about barefoot running but the truth of it the subjects of the book were too poor to buy shoes.

Barefoot running is more than a fad. It promotes arch health and strengthens the muscles of the feet. I recommended it because it forces you to strike with your forefoot, which helps correct many issues with form.

Granted, no, you shouldn't just start barefoot running if you're not at least accustomed to walking barefoot.

The Harvard study funded by Vibram lol.  That "study" resulted in a class action law suit that now has Vibram offering full refunds to anyone who bought their famous five fingered shoes.  Look at the disclaimer at the bottom of the article. Bought and paid for by Vibram.

1 - I block all ads so I can't see what you're talking about.

2 - I didn't recommend any product or brand. In fact, I recommended the opposite.

3 - Running shoes are a very modern invention for a species that historically ran its prey to death.

4 - Believe what you want. I've been around enough to know that running in shoes is a foreign concept in many places in the world.

I guess we should stop driving cars around since that is a new concept.  I didn't say you recommended anything and there was no ad to speak of.  There will be about 30,000 people running the Boston Marathon this year.  I bet you cant find more than 1 or 2 idiots in the whole bunch running barefoot.

Started "Starting Strength" a week ago.  I'm literally starting, as in, I'm trying to get form first.  I had quit running in November because of a nagging knee. Gained a few pounds of fat from sitting around through the holidays.  Decided I was tired of being "skinny-fat" and running wasn't going to do anything to make me stronger.  Haven't lifted a barbell since high school and even then I wasn't "lifting".  Considered going to a gym but everything is so damn expensive.  Ended up with a decent barbell set, squat rack and bench for like $300.  After a few workouts, I can already tell I'm going to like this.

i do 5 bootcamp workouts per week using strictly body weight. been doing it for 2.5 years now and am in the best shape of my life. you won't get huge, but you will get stronger and leaner. our workouts are free and peer-led. i came for the workout and kept coming for the camaraderie. check out www.f3nation.com for more information. we have chapters all over the country.

I am down to lifting only about 2x per week, just trying to maintain strength.  Life is getting in the way.

I feel ya there, I was doing good on my training for the half ironman, and then life and bad weather has kept me from doing anything for the last two week almost. I'm really bummed about this...

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
