Kaepernick not taking pay cut, no trade

I thought at the time when he was signed to an extension there was all this talk about how his contract was supposedly so team friendly, and overwhelmingly in the favor of the 49ers?

Doesn't seem to be that way now..

It is a team friendly contract. It is basically a merit based pay-as-you-go type deal.

I got poo pooed on this a month ago with a plethora of 2 dimes for a dollar quotes

I kinda get it, but the two main prizes will likely be off the board in the first 10 picks. Wentz is really considered the closest to a surefire thing. Why would a GM in his right mind want to get in front of us for the projects? It seems Luke that would be bad business as far as a QB is concerned, being that many of them just crap out. I could see if it was another position.

Not so team friendly when neither the 49ers, nor the Broncos want to take on his salary. Take a look at the cap hits coming up. $15 million this year, $19 million the next.

If there weren't all these questions looming regarding his play, and reputation with his teammates, things might be different I guess.

Regardless, I don't think Colin is as bad as some people here are making him out to be. Kelly made Foles look like a legitimate quarterback, I wouldn't be surprised if he experiences a good bit of success. I also wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't last particularly long, due to Kelly's style of offense.

I think it's team friendly in the sense that the team can cut him any year with a very small cap hit/dead money.

I think kaep is gonna put up some good numbers under chip.

At the time of the contract, Kap was looked at as the franchise QB, and even the future standard for the position in many circles.  His contract was not only good from a money standpoint, but allowed them the flexibility to cut him without reprisal.  Neither Cam nor Andy Dalton wanted anything near like the way Kap's contract was structured. The only way that this is not a "team friendly" deal is if Kap hits all his qualifiers, and even then it is still arguably a very good contract because he would be playing out of his mind. In other words, they'd be getting their money's worth. Moreover, with the rising cap, the 20 something million that he's be commanding in a couple of years wouldn't be that hard to swallow.

As it stands, the reality is that Kap has lost money, and the only serious penalty that the 49ers are experiencing is from his poor play. They left themselves with a yearly way out though.

Starting next season, Kaepernick's salary goes down $2 million each year if he is not named first- or second-team All-Pro, or if the 49ers don't play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80% of the snaps taken by Kaepernick, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.

The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, and Kaepernick ranks 22nd in quarterback rating, which means the de-escalator is going to kick in.

In addition, while many outlets were reporting that Kaepernick's deal included a record $61 million in "guaranteed" money, it turns out the money was guaranteed only for injury. Each year of the contract, the 49ers can decide to cut Kaepernick before April 1 and will not owe him any more money.

Makes sense. All the jokes about him aside, I can't blame the guy at all for refusing to take a paycut. Things change real quick in the NFL.

not afraid to admit i'm happy about that

kaepernick flamed out in SF but he's still young with a huge amount of talent.  the possibility of him having tangibly improved with a change of scenery and being on a team that's still pretty stacked like denver's wasn't appealing to me.

shhh don't say that here, the homers get riled up

Reminds me of the 2012-2013 niners. Average Athletic QB with a lot of fugging talent around him.
