you know what the definition of insanity is? doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.  Carolinas pass rush just wasn't there last year.  Carolina basically has the same line as it did last year.  I don't see a rookie being drafted coming in and making it substantially better this year.  We lost Jared Allen. I don't see Ealy as a force consistently.  Carolina needs to bring in a vet DE.

A lot of talent already on the roster. Some seen, some unseen. Our deline had a down year this last one, no queston. Even with the same guys, I'd bet on seeing a better pass rush.

While Jared Alllen's leadership was great, his performance on the field was just "steady".

I'll a starting duo of Johnson and Ealy sounds damn good to me. It'll be interesting to see the young guys that have had a year in the system. They will see the field with our rotation.

No point bringing in another vet. Where are you going to play him?

Not over Johnson or Ealy. As part of the rotation?  I don't see it. We got guys already for that.

There were times when it was an issue but overall the team was 5 in the league in hurries and 6th in sacks. That in no way equates to "just wasn't there".

Love this move (no pun intended). Significant rotational depth that will help us be able to take the BPAs in the draft. Like others I wish we could have gotten him on a 2 yr deal but you have to love how DG is sitting on some serious cash for the next round of contracts on top of keeping all our older vet guys around for less money.

Also, given how deep the draft is at DT this year, it's good not to relegate a new draft pick to years of only spot play... It will help keep the training camp competition hot... About 40% (rough estimate...) of our roster will be in contract years!  It will make for an awful headache for Gman next season, but for THIS coming season.... WATCH OUT!

Earlier today I threw out a rough approximation of what I thought was our contract situation next year.  Turns out I UNDER estimated the number of players who are entering contract years.

Not counting 16 PS/Futures contract players who are unsure to make the roster, we have 56 players signed.  27 of them (48%) have contracts ending after this season, fairly evenly distributed among the types of players.

  • 10 of 22 starters (Brown, Coleman, Ginn, CJ, Kalil, Norman, Norwell, Oher, Remmers, Short)
  • 10 of 20 role players (Addison, Boykin, Horton, Jacobs, Jones, Klein, Love, Waters, Whittaker, Teddy Williams)
  • 7 of 14 backups (Bersin, Hill, McClain, Robinson, Scott, Simonson, Young)

(These 56 players are all the guys who were on our 53 last season, or on IR whom we've kept, plus new free agent signings like Soliai, Swayze Waters, Boykin, etc...)

Obviously, the 48% figure SHOULD decrease, because we will be adding draft picks to the roster, and should hopefully be signing an extension with KK, maybe others.  Probably 6 or 7 of the guys currently on one-year prove it contracts will not make the roster...
