Current Panther roster

RB is going to bite us in the ass if we don't do something.  Stew is a wildcard.  I know it is unpopular but I say RB in the 1st.

Must shore up the tackle position this year.  Maybe D. Williams is the answer but the sample size is so small.  OT in the 2nd.

I so much believe that Bene is going to jump off of the charts this year.  CB would be next but could get pushed to 4th round because of how much I believe in Big Play.

DE in the 4th (or 3rd, see directly above).  CJ did us a solid but I don't think he does it again next year.

Not sure what will be left at #167 but I would pick the highest on the board at TE or double dip at DE if it was me.

In round #7 take a flyer on a DT in case you cannot sign both KK and Star (won't probably happen).

Fill the UFA with S and WR and set your sights on SB51.

P.S.  I have no problem with Tre at S which is why I did not address it nor do I think Mr. Waters needs competition at P but that is just me.

Olsen is the only tight end I trust.. if he goes down I dont see Dickson or Simon making all pro

Not that I don't view TE as a spot that could be upgraded, but that's pretty high expectations for a backup, no? Two TEs make the All-Pro teams each year, this year being Olsen and Gronk. We could trade for Eifert, Kelce, or Reed and still not have an All-Pro as a backup.

Hawkins and Yankey could be a couple of gems in terms of oline depth, some thought highly of them coming out of college.  We need another DT pretty bad, im thinking they're gonna wait and see how the draft goes and if they can't fill it through there then they'll bring back kyle love. Could use another young DE, don't know how much we can rely on the young guys in Miley and Cox. Could bring in another corner/safety and another TE would be a welcome addition, but overall I say I'm pretty happy with where the roster is at for the beginning of April

This is how bad teams draft.

  • Currently there are 71 players under contract.

  • 19 roster spots still open.

  • 6 draft picks. 9-10 Undrafted free agent signings.

  • You can clearly see that we are absolutely loaded. There is not 1 major hole on this team.

  • It’s possibly the best roster in franchise history. Even our future FA have upside: Larry Webster, David Yankey

  • Great depth and youth throughout.

  • Areas of upgrade/improvement:

  1. Depth at OT and 1 more CB

  2. Backup RB

  3. Depth at TE. I am convinced we’re going to draft a TE this year.

  4. A young DE that we can develop as replacement for CJ

  5. Another DT. Look for Kyle Love to be re-signed soon.

Oh yeah, Punter, we need a punter to compete w/Swayze Waters. Probably sign an UFDA rather than draft one since we only have 6 picks this yr.

Probably.  But Dave has never used a 7th pick.  (He didn't have one in 2013, and he traded the 2014 & 2015 7th picks to move up...).  If we end up still having a 7th round pick (not trading it), I could envision him using it for a punter.  But otherwise, UDFA should be fine.  Paging Matt Wile....!  (Or maybe he's sick of the Panthers after last year's revolving door!)

So, with the resigning of Kyle love, if my math is correct, we currently have 56 fairly solid "vet" players on the roster, plus 16 futures contracts/PS guys.  Room for 18 more.

Here's what's crazy:

51 of the 56 vet players were with the team last season, either on the 53, or on injured reserve.  (This includes Lou Young who squeaked onto the roster from the PS at the end of the season, and Wes Horton who got waived off the roster and sentdown to the PS due to his drug suspension and our injuries at CB which necessitated bringing in more players.  It also includes KB, Bene, Hill & Miley who were all on the IR, thus not counting against a roster spot, but who will be on or vying for the roster.)

5 are new free agents (Waters, Soliai, Gradkowski, Robinson, Boykin)

I'd estimate 44 - 48 of these 56 are probably pretty sure bets to make the 53, leaving a maximum of 5 - 9 spots in contention for the final 53 man roster.

We're going to draft 4 - 6 rookies, depending on what DG does with trades to move up, plus add another dozen UDFA / FAs.

We've got 16 PS / futures guys, some of whom seem like they could be solid players (Cox, Dismukes, Dowling, Webster, Yankey)

Basically, we've already got a stocked-full Super Bowl contending roster, and we're going to have nearly 40 - 45 guys competing to get on it or get starting time.

Think of who we've got fighting for spots, starts & playing time - without even yet adding a new crop of draft picks into the mix:

Oline:  D Williams & Remmers battling for starting RT

RBs:  Fozzy, CAP, Wegher continue to fight for RB snaps & playing time alongside Stew.

WRs:  KB fighting to prove he's still WR #1 and that he's fully back; .... Hill, Bersin, Norwood, Byrd ....  Even Ginn & Brown may be fighting for spots if the competition is hot.

DEs:  Miley, Cox, Delaire fighting for maybe 1 spot in the rotation.

DTs:  Love & Soliai (could be only 1 will make the roster....), plus an almost certain draft pick

DBs:  Bene (fighting to nail down the outside CB spot), Boston (fighting for the starting FS spot), Josh wanting to earn his BIG MONEY so again needing a stellar year;  Boykin, Marlowe, Jones, McClain, Robinson, Young... all trying to get on the field....

Heck, we'll even be having some competition among the specialists with Punter up for grabs.

...and again, this doesn't count most of the promising PS guys from last year or the Futures contract guys...or the guys we're about to draft.

About the only positions with little drama:  QB, LS, LB & TE

BUT, I fully expect a TE could be drafted adding spice to the mix... putting Dickson & Simonson on the hot seat.  And I wouldn't put it past DG to arrange some meaningful competition at LB too...?!. After all, we may be in the market for a new primary backup if this is AJ Klein's last season with us....

Wowee.  Gonna be hot hot hot in Spartanburg.   Gotta find a way to get there and see it for myself.  Hoping I can swing some break time in the States this summer!

Once again, great job.

A few things:

Add kicker to the no drama list.

Agree, we are drafting a TE this year. Just by looking at the TE depth chart you can see upgrades are in store. Also, interest in Jared Cook before he signed w/Packers was very telling.

I do not envy Gettleman come cut time.  Just a quick look at some "locks" and we already have 48 players.  With 6 draft picks coming in, that is already one player too many.

(3)QB: Cam, DA, Webb

(4)RB: Stew, Payne, Tolbert, Wegher/Fozzy

(5)WR: Benjy, Funchess, Ginn, Brown, Bersin/Byrd/Hill/Norwood

(2)TE: Olsen, Dickson/Simonson

(3)T: Oher, Remmers, Williams

(3)G: Turner, Norwell, Scott

(2)C: Kalil, Gradkowski

(4)DT: Star, Short, Love, Saliai

(5)DE: CJ, Ealy, Addison, Delaire, Cox/Horton/Miley

(3)OLB: Davis, Shaq, Jacobs/Blechen

(3)MLB: Luke, Klein, Mayo

(4)CB: Norman, Bene, Boykin, McClain/Young/Williams

(2)FS: Coleman, Marlowe/Jones/Dowling

(2)SS: Boston, Ball/Robinson

(3)STM: Gano, Jansen, Waters

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
