More reason to be glad we didn't go after Chip Kelly

Last week, former Eagles coach Chip Kelly continued to push the ridiculous narrative that he didn’t run the show in Philly. This week, someone has leaked to the media details that further prove Kelly is full of something other than smoothies.

A former member of the Philadelphia front office told Matt Lombardo of NJ.com that Howie Roseman and the team’s scouts had little input over the draft during Kelly’s three seasons with the team. The biggest example came from the decision-making process that resulted in the selection of linebackerMarcus Smith in round one.

“Right before that [2014] draft, the scouts set the board,” the unnamed former employee told Lombardo. “Then Chip got a hold of it and totally turned it around. Scouts had no say at all in that draft. Anybody that Chip didn’t want, that player’s card got removed from the board and thrown in the trash. Those guys were never even in the discussion.

“Almost immediately, you had a lot of scouts looking around and wondering, ‘Why am I even working? Why the hell are we even here?’ We put all of this work in, put the information in and Chip changed everything and took whoever he wanted to take.”

The source, who said that he had a third-round draft grade on Smith, explained that Kelly would listen to former front-office exec Tom Gamble, but that Kelly wouldn’t listen to Roseman.

“It just wasn’t a good relationship,” the source told Lombardo.

The not-so-good relationship hit the fan after the 2014 season, when Roseman fired Gamble and Kelly responded with a showdown that resulted in Kelly getting the keys to the car and Roseman being promoted to executive V.P. of football operations while also being physically exiled by Kelly from football operations.

Kelly took over draft, alienated scouts in Philly

Yeesh.

Got a co-worker who's a big 49er fan. He's immensely bummed with the Kelly hire.

Stories like this certainly won't help. Kelly honestly sounds like a bit of a psycho.

I dont know if its attitude or schematics but kelly is not half the coach harbaugh is.  I still cant belive san fran diddnt win the superbowl against baltimore a couple years ago.

I'm not sure what Jims deal is, other than the fact that he is a crazy person....but he is a heck of a coach and motivator.  Good for getting a team out of the dumpster, but not keeping them on top.

Sort of like Marty.

I am also glad we didn't get Harbaugh.  He whined to much for my taste, and he would have eventually worn out his welcome here.

Doesn't this basically happen everywhere? Not with the HC necessarily, but the GM will throw out a bunch of names that won't be drafted by the team for a multitude of reasons.

If your GM and scouting department are working together, those names won't even make it to the board in the first place.

Not trying to defend Chip but if you're going to ding  him for drafting Smith you have to also give him credit for drafting Lane, Ertz and Logan the previous year, Mathews after Smith. Hicks looks loike a nice find in round 3  last year and I know a bunch here were in love with Aghalor. Sounds more lIke sour grapes, he just left the college ranks and obviously felt good about what he saw himself first hand. Cant blame him for wanting to do it his way. His drafting looks above par even if Smith is a bust.

I think chip has history with Baalke and Gamble is there now too. It might not be the disaster some expect in SF. Philly did have 2 10-6 seasons before things went sour. Gotta keep that D off the field tho Chip.
