Knowingly making a possible bad life choice

Doc Holiday

Recommended Posts

I am currently openly considering quiting my current job and taking a much worse job(pay/benefit wise) just so I can be rid of he headache and bs at work.

only reason I haven't quit yet is because I know if I were to quick it would be bad for many reasons, like pay/bills/job sec/benefits

but I honestly don't know how much more I can stand the constant BS I'm dealing with at work.

Anyone ever make a similar choice? And thoughts??

didn't you just make a thread a few days ago about how well you're compensated and that you can finally save?

if so, my advice is that we always want what we don't have. you may dread your line of work but enjoy the pay, but if you find a job where you enjoy the work - you may dread the pay.

some say "find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life" so it depends greatly on your financial situation. If you just recently began to finally find yourself saving money, you may want to stick with the job that pays more until you're a little more stable.

That is true, finally do have a good amount of savings put away, and well compensated is relative to the job I work, for what I do, I don't really have any complaints.

But the job is utter poo, I'm a jailer in a shitty small county jail and have to deal with some real unpleasant people and situations on a continual biases, for example I had to deal with a guy that came in for attempted murder a few months back and he was covered in blood, and despite my best efforts I still got some on me, and 3 weeks ago I had a upset inmate throw toilet water on me. it's not fun and not a situation I anyone would want to stay in on a continual basis.

And to top it all off despite the fact that I have been a model employee, and have been told that several times by my Jail admin(head boss of the jail).  I have been poo on because I don't know the current sheriff(was elected last year) and basically have been passed up for a promotion twice, because I am not as well connected some people. my Jail admin told me that they understand and suggested that I go somewhere that promotions werent handed out based upon if you are related or not to someone. like I said it's a small county that I work in with small county politics.

So yeah my work situation is that bad.

My current job drives me nuts...  Like, I would tell my boss that I need to leave at 5pm on a dot and he would say ok...  Just to be called by him in a 2-3 hour meeting at 4:55pm...  My wife would call me and leave mean messages lol...  Btw, he does that a lot... Or give me 2 day long project an hour before my vacation and tell me he needs it before I leave for vacation...  Then have no clue why I'm angry...

In the end... It's a good paying job so I will just bend over, spread my cheeks and take it.  The American Dream.

Doc. Don't quit until you have the other job in hand.

I pulled a Jerry Maguire from Wachovia in Aug 05.

I was one of the guys the movie/book The Big Short referred to that called the housing crash a few years before it happened. No i wasn't named but i saw it coming and tried to cash in by being ahead of the foreclosures. Problem was i was TOO far ahead. In a flash i went from tons in savings to cutting grass to put food on the table. Never assume you can land the next job. Never ever ever.

I have yet to find the perfect job.

It's either you get paid well and have to put up with things ya don't like, or you find a better environment, but the pay isn't even close to what ya want/need.

Find out what is most important to you, and find a job that fills those needs.

Is definitely easier to find a desirable job when you are already employed.

Not mine.

As long as the pay justifies the bs then it is worth it.  Once it doesn't time to find something else.  I just did my 3rd move in n the past 5 years each change was a positive and help me.  One I didn't really want to make but I am better off doing it.  Hopefully now I have reached a point where I can settle down and grow some roots.

I quit a very good job in 1999 working for a company I loved but my manager the VP of the place was such a hard ass pecker head MF I told my secretary if I had two more bad days in a row I was handing in my notice....  Well it happened and I handed in my 2 week notice....   Longest 2 weeks of my life....

Biggest mistake I have ever made....  Looking back on it over the years....  I realize my boss was only trying to manage me the only way he knew how...  I had climbed the ladder to a respectable job and blew it...  I have regretted it ever since...  Think long and hard before you make the decision !!

My business partner is stealing money from me and I pretend like I don't know about it so I am building a case....

We all don't like where we are but quite frankly, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. You will find it is the same old stinky poo.

Maybe my perspective is a little different because I spent the first 20 years of my adult life in the military, which isn't a job, it's your life 24/7 for as long as you're in. Anything after that is gravy.

Anyway, I do not believe anyone should allow their job to define who they are as a person. Your job is a means to an end- putting a roof over your/family head and keeping you/family fed. Regardless of how much it pays or how crappy it may or may not be, as long as it allows you to provide, fug it.

Think of it this way. If you had the choice between Job A making $75k a year, working Mon- Fri 8-5 and you hate the work, or..... Job B making $75k a year, working 60+ hours a week, traveling overnites 3-5 days a week, but you absolutely love the work- which would you choose?

In my mind, if you have a family, it's a no-brainer. Missing birthdays and weekends with the family, etc.... no way.

That Monday- Friday gig looks pretty good to me knowing I go home every night, play with my dogs, work in the yard, head down to the beach house for the occasional long weekend.

And I've had both Job A and Job B and there are ups and downs to both, but the person I am at work is not the person I am at home. I am completely 110% dedicated to my job, work hard to be the best I can and provide the best leadership I know how to my subordinates. And when the day ends, I've seen all my peeps out the door and I'm on my way home, I know we'll all be back tomorrow for more.

The same concept goes with buying a house.

Atleast here where I live, I have friend who take 3 hours to get home from work because their house was a "steal" where they live.

I live in a modest home in Pasadena,CA (which isn't saying much) and it takes me 15-20 minutes to get home.

I would much rather be home at a decent hour, spend time with my wife and kids then spend my mornings and night unhappy.

Same with our jobs, choose the one that is best for you although it will never be perfect, it should be good enough.

Now I do that, I always make sure, I live as close to work as possible, positives out weigh the negatives by a mile.  I currently drive about 7 miles and no traffic ever.

I hear what you are saying, I honestly am looking for something that would at least be a lateral movement pay wise if I do not get my benefits on my next job. Job cant get worse then this current one.

    • This has been every game this year. We get blown out and have to come back.
    • The really frustrating thing is that Hubert knows why he has to do scheme wise with this roster he just doesn't want to do it until we're down big and he's forced to do it then we come roaring back. Just do the damn thing from the get go. fug how you want to play ideally. Good coaches adapt their schemes to the talent they have. We have a lot of talent we just lack any post presence on either end of the court. Press and get after it from the opening tipoff and stop waiting until you're down 20 to do it.
