J-No wants 16 million a year

My question is, what if he comes back on the franchise tag and plays at a similarly high level next season?  Do we tag him again or let him walk if he still wont agree to whatever we offer?  The franchise tag for next season wouldn't really be an unreasonable amount for an elite corner so it isn't out of the question that we would tag him again but with all the other salary obligations upcoming DG might just let him walk.

With the increased cost of the 2nd tag you might as well sign him to a long term deal.  Depending on the long term deal is structured your 2 year cost could be close to the same if you decided to cut him after 2 years.  So at worst you give yourself the option of having him for extra years if you want.  This is why you very rarely see guys get tagged two years in a row.

yeah we can just plug shitty players in as long as we have a good line that's why all of our other backs have never panned out

We got to the Super Bowl with a defensive backfield that had Robert McClain, Cortland Finnegan, Kurt Coleman and Roman Harper. Your statement isnt very far from the truth.

For everyone who is saying "bye" to Norman because of these numbers, it seems like bitterness to me.  Why can't we just be happy for the guy, a product out of the Carolinas, born and raised?  Why can't we be happy for a guy we drafted, who struggled to finally reach the peak of success?  In fact not only did he reach that peak, but he's gone to a level where many believe he is the best corner in the game.  That is amazing stuff.

If J-No leaves next year for more money, this should be one of the times we should all be joyful for him.  Be joyful for the individual success here.  Don't let this man leave in the midst of bitter fans.  If that happens, I would consider it a joke and a shame.

Exactly, complete bullshit to bring this up, i hate when fans stoop to this level. Josh won games for us last year, that so called elite pass rush was at best above average for half the year. Josh made us better on D, thats facts.

Agreed. We lose that Jags game if not for his pick 6. I said it before, as soon as this contract situation does not go in favor of the Panthers the fans will turn on him.

I will say bye to him without any hesitation if he's seeking that money. But there's no bitterness. Those two things don't automatically go together.

Because most people are fans of the team and what he supposedly is demanding is highly against our team's philosophy and would hurt us big time if we gave into his demands. If he wants that kind of money, well good luck playing on a team next year that won't make the playoffs while we're a contender every year. Only bad teams offer contracts like that.

For a team to trade for him they would probably want him to agree to a long term deal before the trade.  How many teams would be willing to pay Norman what he wants and give up a good draft pick?  Probably not many.

Also by keeping him for one more year you give whatever rookie you draft time to develop.

I'm not saying we shouldn't or wouldn't trade him if the right offer came along but I would be surprised if it did.

tag and trades are rare.  any time we have a high profile player about to leave or actually tagged everybody screams for us to trade them or my favorite "at least get something for him".  the same thing happened with hardy after 2014.

first he has to sign his tender which, as far as i know, has yet to happen.  it's not uncommon to see guys in norman's situation play chicken with the FO in the months leading up to training camp using their unsigned tender as leverage.  julius peppers did it too.

then, as you mentioned, there also pretty much has to be a deal worked out ahead of time.  nobody is going to give us two first round picks for a one year rental or if there is a chance of a holdout.  people have this idea that you can just slap the tag on a guy and then ship him off to the browns or raiders and collect your draft picks and the panthers are the only team in the league that haven't figured that out.  it's not that easy and actually takes a collaborative effort between two teams, the player, and his representation for it to work.  everybody has to be happy for it to move forward.

trying to pull off a tag and trade without a deal on the table is really risky for the team doing the tagging.  if the tender is unsigned, all the panthers can do is rescind the tag and let him hit the market as a free agent.  there is no cap penalty in that scenario.  once he signs the tender though we're locked in and the cap hit is on the books.  if nobody wants to dish up the draft picks or if the teams interested in the player aren't on his short list or really anything else then it totally backfired.
