Will Gettleman pay that or anything close to that?  No.

Is Josh Norman worth that or anything close to that?  No.

Do I blame Josh Norman for doing what he feels he needs to do in contract negotiations?  No.

Will I despise Gettleman and/or Josh if things don't work out and Josh leaves?  No.

Have you ever Huddled before? we say that now... a year from now huddlers be like:

"that greedy piece of trash. I'm glad he's gone. He wasn't worth 5 mil a year. I'd rather we see if Gamble still has any tread left on the tires. We don't need his 18 penalties a game in the backfield when we have Ryan Delaire and Wes Horton wrecking house up front....etc etc"

Josh is good... don't get me wrong. However, just because a Desperate Team pays.... Waay too much for their players, shouldn't mean the Panthers Should. IMO I don't even think Sherman is worth 16 Mill a Year.. maybe 12.  He sat on the bench for 3 Years, had 1 good year. Maybe he is Bitter because he sat on the Bench for so long? I hope he can see the example of Tedd Ginn... and not leave over a couple of million. We will pay you your 16 Million this year. Next year you will sign a Vet friendly Deal to 4 Year 8Million/ 32 Million deal. Capiche?

Let's be honest.  The front seven makes average defensive backs look much better than they are.  Hi, Mike Mitchell.  Josh Norman is well above average, obviously.  But at $16 mill....he's pricing himself out of here.  The Panthers can get by with an average to above average corner replacement.  The front seven is that strong and will remain that strong under Gettleman.  I really like Josh and want him here long term.  But at that price, he'll have to go.

Ill start off by saying I want Norman here. The swag and talent he brings to that D is definitely a plus.  However, with a soon to be 30 year old corner with one break out here on his contract here seeking $16 million to be the highest paid CB in the league, has left me scratching my head.   He wants Sherman, Peterson, and Revis money, more money in fact.  If Norman had been balling like this for the past 2-3 years then I would say okay he can justify his request.  But I do agree with several huddlers that our dominant Front 7 makes any average CB look great, aka Mitchell, Coleman, Harper, etc. These players are good role players but not house hold superstars.   My gut feeling was Norman being a hometown guy with Carolina ties and the comradery in which this team and locker has with Norman, for him to be tagged and then ask for $16 million, makes me feel he will eventually holdout, play this year and will be gone next year.  Unless he comes to senses and accepts the 11-13 mill reported Panthers have offered.   Gettleman is amazingly crafty with his money and signings, I just can't see Gettleman agreeing to pay $16 mill for a 30 year old CB.   Heck, we just cut the 2nd all time sack leader in CJ and then resigned him for a 1/5 of what his contract was suppose to be.  Result, CJ wanted to be here more than accepting more $$$.   Gman has cut all time leading receiver and rusher because of Age and not wanting to take a pay cut.

If Norman signs his tender and hopefully works out a realistic contract I will jump for joy.  If Gman decides to trade him for 2 1st round picks, I will simply shrug my shoulders and say "In Gettleman I trust"

II have said this before---bingo.  Norman on another team is not a lock-down CB.  He is solid, but he lacks all of the traits every true lock down has.
Gettlemen is not thinking like some of the impulsive mathletes on this board--thank God.  Sign KK,...Sign Star....Sign Norman.....Give them all what they want.....I hope they do not use the same logic with their credit cards.

We will spend where it matters the most.  Our defense has not changed much over the years.  I think we abandoned the 3-4 when Capers left.  We have actually drafted 1 CB in the first round (Gamble) and we have signed one elite free agent (Evans--I think Davis was under Capers).  That is it.  Who were our CBs when we were in Super Bowl 38?  Cousins and I can't remember the other, but I can tell you Peppers, Jenkins, Buckner, and Rucker.  Morgan in the middle.

We have not changed.  Norman rose from a 5th rounder with a 4.65 40 time to an NFL star.  Good for him, but our success is not predicated on shut-down CB play---it is grounded in stuffing the run and pressuring the QB.  Take away the run option and give the QB 3 seconds to throw it, CB becomes much easier.

Norman tends to jump routes, something you can do if you know the pressure will be there.  Norman also lacks discipline.  He is a good player, but not near $16m good.  (I know he is trying to set his side for negotiating purposes, but it was a stupid move.  Gettlemen has the leverage.

Ken Lucas was a top FA signing at CB in 2005

Dang.  I missed that one.  Oh well, would you say that bringing in top CB free agents paid off?   Would you say that Lucas was elite like Evans?  I was not of that impression at the time, but I may have not realized that we were getting an elite CB.

With any great and dominant front 7 like ours it makes corners not as high of a priority.  We play a ton of zone coverage and yes stopping the rush and pushing the passer puts pressure on the QB and less pressure on the CBs.  That's why you see a lot of Cover 3 and just don't get beat deep and keep everything in front of you because we have the best LB duo in the league underneath.   I would say the last true CB FA we signed was Lucas who was a huge asset long with Mike Wahle that year.  Gamble was last true CB draft pick.  Other that, our philosophy on defense has sent average CB's to high paying contracts do y'all remember a name Ricky Manning Jr!  Mike Mitchell, was a back up at the Raiders for Christ sake.

We've done it so rarely in our history that it's hard to make a definitive judgment on that. Lucas wasn't great but he was pretty good. Eric Davis played a large role in us getting to the NFC Championship Game in 1996. We've never won a Super Bowl so there is an argument that nothing we've ever done has paid off. In general, I believe going big in free agency is a bad idea, but adding 1 or 2 very good veteran players can put a team over the top and evidence from past Super Bowl winners has shown that to be the case. Denver is really the only exception in that a lot of their team was built through free agency, but in general drafting and retaining your core and adding 1 or 2 stars through FA/trade has been a common denominator for recent Super Bowl winners.

Yep, time to enjoy one last season of Norman as a Panther.  Hopefully he well understands that his best way to maximize his value is playing to his full potential under the tag.

This past season was a contract year and he was phenomenal. Now that 2016-17 is also a contract year, I look forward to more of the same. He's too much of a competitor not to bust his ass again. If he has the same type of season, he'll be looking for $17-18 million a year from now.

Where are these reports that he turned down $10-12mil a year?  I only remember him turning down $7-8mil.  Regardless either way, him trying to maximize his earnings doesn't make him a diva.  Trying to say he was only the top CB in the NFL for a year and a half is ignorant to the point. You don't overpay or underpay based on what players did in the past. You pay based on what they're projected to do in the future. And there's no reason Norman won't play in the next few years like he did last year and the half year he started before that.

Now is he worth $16mil per year to us?  Not likely. I'm hoping they reach some common ground in the $12-13mil a year range.
