J-No wants 16 million a year

Apparently Josh Norman is wanting around 16 million a year to stay in Carolina long term.

From the Observer...

Gettleman said last week he’s not worried about Norman’s contract situation becoming a distraction. But Norman, who’s looking for a deal in the neighborhood of $16 million a year, applied public pressure on the Panthers during a couple of national TV appearances last week.

I am not saying Josh is not worth 16 million a year. I am saying there is no way will Gettleman pay that for a corner long term. Gettleman's defensive dollar priorities are along the defensive line and linebackers. A good enough front seven can make lower paid mediocre defensive backs look much better than they actually are. See Mike Mitchell for example.

Do I blame J-No for wanting to be paid? Not at all.

But he won't be getting the money he feels he deserves in Carolina, that is a certainty.

Gettleman is getting a one year franchise player rental is appears.

Annnndddd bye bye JNo.

Maybe he is saying 16mil so he can get 12-13mil year. Isn't one of the rules in negotitations to ask for more than what you need?

Will Gettleman pay that or anything close to that?  No.

Is Josh Norman worth that or anything close to that?  No.

Do I blame Josh Norman for doing what he feels he needs to do in contract negotiations?  No.

Will I despise Gettleman and/or Josh if things don't work out and Josh leaves?  No.

Didn't we already offer 11-12?

The problem with paying a top cb that kind of money is their effectiveness gets diminished vs spread formations, which is all the rage in the nfl these days.

We need to solidify the nickel position and have depth at corner. Need more consistent pass rush too.

    • This.  Walker will likely be a good to great NFL player, but he is not a good fit if you consider risk and what Morgan did last year with a raw player.  Is Walker raw?  You could argue either side of that debate, but I also think this:  It is February, and there is a ton of digging to do--many on here have claimed that Walker is their pick, and now we are not discussing players, we are fighting to see who is right.  This is research time--digging and watching and listening. You have not seen the combine yet.  I love the player, but there are pros and cons.  Instead of trying to prove your point all the damn time, try to find someone who can change your mind.  I come here for that reason, not to be right all the time--coincidentally, that is usually the result.  😀 No disrespect to people who want him, I just look at the big picture and think from Morgan's perspective.   Last year, Morgan did not pick well when he was drafting day 1-2 offensive players.  He drafted Wallace, maybe his best draft pick and Sanders was low hanging fruit in round 4.  Smith-Wade was a good pick in the fifth, another defensive player who looks to be the nickel at the moment.  Remember, the focus was offense, and Morgan struggled. XL has 2025 to change that.  I do not think Morgan gives up on XL, and with the addition of Coker and AT's announcement to return, I think he will add a WR or two, just not in round 1.  Let's not forget, however, that Morgan WAS a LB.  He will think like one when he watches Walker tape.  If Morgan loves Walker's hybrid qualities and Evero gets in his ear, the pick is likely to be Walker--but if he sees him as a LB, Morgan has clearly stated ILB, Edge, S.  as the biggest needs.  When he says "needs" he means starters.  I love the DL in this draft--watching the combine, OH CRAP.  Deep as hell. S---deep as hell.  This is why I think the first pick will be Edge.  Does Morgan see Walker with abilities to play edge at a high level?  I think it comes down to that.
