G-man making Saints Nervous?

The Saints are following our scouts across america to every pro day we attend.

I am reading tons of articles that start off, "Panthers visit small school player at pro day. Also, in attendance the NO Saints." They say this is a copy cat league. So, Would a team scout the same players we do just because we do? Is G-man making everyone nervous?

In 2010 their band of merry rednecks invaded BOA and crushed Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike, much to their delight.  This helped seal their fate for a generation or more with the drafting of Cameron Jerrell Newton with the #1 overall pick.

Hell we liked Brandin Cooks too.  But not enough to draft over KB if given the choice and d@mn sure not enough to trade a 3rd that could have been the Big Easy's own Trai Turner.  Can't fix stupid.

Look at the moves by the rest of the NFC South, they realize how much catch-up they had to do so they've signed tons of free agents to big contracts. Wouldn't surprise me if Gettleman has to go full smokescreen because 31 other teams have seen what he can do with hands tied behind his back thanks to Hurney. Imagine their fright realizing Carolina has a franchise QB and defensive caliber MVP already under contract with $70 million to spare next year.

I've been as hard on Hurney as anyone, but I gotta say, it's not exactly accurate to say that Gettleman's hands were tied by Hurney.  Sure, there were some bad contracts and bad draft picks, but it isn't often that a GM can take over a team with a young franchise QB, one of the best defensive players in the game, and coaching staff already in place.

So, yeah.  Sure, there were some problems otherwise the position wouldn't have been open, but all things considered, Gettleman walked into a pretty good situation for a new GM.  What he has done with that has been nothing short of fantastic.

There's truth to this, but that 70 mil in cap space for next year is deceptive because we have so many players whose contracts expire next year.

Among our current starters, there are 10 (compared with 4 this season):

  • Brown, Philly

  • Coleman, Kurt

  • Ginn, Jr., Ted

  • Johnson, Charles

  • Kalil, Ryan

  • Norman, Josh

  • Norwell, Andrew

  • Oher, Michael

  • Remmers, Mike

  • Short, Kawann

Among our role players, there are 8 (same as this season)

  • Addison, Mario

  • Horton, Wes

  • Jacobs, Ben

  • Jones, Colin

  • Klein, A.J.

  • Waters, Swayze

  • Whittaker, Fozzy

  • Williams, Teddy

Among our backups /.depth there are 5  (same as this season)

  • Bersin, Brenton

  • Hill, Stephen

  • McClain, Robert

  • Robinson, Trenton

  • Scott, Chris

So, that's 23 guys from our 53 (43%) that need to be re-signed next year or replaced, but 10 starters.  Ouch.  That's gonna eat up a lot of that 70 mil, as will trying to resign guys whose contracts will end in 2018 before they become free agents (Star, Bene, KB (we have the 5th year option for him), Ealy, Stew, Turner, Norwell...

Only 4 of the 22 starters on our roster (Cam, Luke, Greg, Shaq)  are currently locked up beyond 2018.  DG has a TON of work to do in the next 12-18 months!!!!  YIKES.

That's true, Short is a definite and I could see a moderate extension coming for Norwell, probably nothing insane. In my opinion the draft will dictate some of the others, Johnson and Kalil while highly touted and paid might see Gettleman draft their replacement this year. Coleman and Oher definitely outperformed their contracts, we'll see if we draft or find their replacement elsewhere. Norman will be gone if he doesn't sign what Gettleman wants and guys like Ginn, Brown and Remmers are replaceable. The way I see with this penny pinching, we'll be flush with cap considering the growing revenue even after signing core guys in 2017 and 2018. All the while Gettleman has been killing it in the draft while the NFC South is paying all pro bucks to guys like Sweezy, Sanu and Fleener.

I think history will be kind to Hurney when all is said and done, honestly if we had won this past superbowl he would be as deserving if not more so than Gettleman due to the reasons you already listed, now I do think Gettleman is a much better overall GM but a lot of people will look good with Rivera(2x coach of the year), Cam(NFL MVP) and Keek(NFL DMVP) already on a team when they take over. he hasnt had to much rebuilding on those fronts.

And remember there were a lot of people against cam, and wondering why we drafted Keek when beason was on the team.

When he first got here, we were a good amount over the cap. he managed to get under the cap enough to be able to sign bottom barrel FAs. at the time, the signings seemed so awful that he garnered a TON of heat. "how could we go into 2013 with this seconday, they sky is falling"  .he suprised everyone by going 12-4...  He inherited a beast QB that elevates this team and a beast MLB but dont act like when he just got here it was a cake walk.  its hard as fug to win in this league and some teams cant do it even with hreat situations. the hands tied behind his back statement rides along the lines of having NO cap room to make solid signings, but still did it. that was phenominal, he he continues to be phenominal.

but i think you are right as far as long term he walked into a great situation. its a great org, he inherited two great players( even though he extended them to very fair deals)   i hope you didnt forget how shitty and ugly of a spot he was in in 2013

If DG was a mere mortal, then yes. However, DG gives 0 fugs what those clowns know or don't know.

I am not really being serious (mainly because the amount of resources we would waste doing that would be incredible) but more offering out there in an imaginary but not completely unrealistic Kafkaesque type of strategy by our front office
