[Updated] Josh Norman Oklahoma Drill Interview AND Dameshek video

Recommended Posts

Some food for thought by Josh Norman during an interview by Brooke Cersosimo

http://www.nfl.com/joshnorman

Among other things, Norman feels that he has put in the work, gotten good results, and that his contract should reflect that.

"I think it's a contract to justify what I've done. If the contract speaks for the numbers, I mean, if it says I'm the top, what does that look like? I don't want to sell myself short. Why should I? "

Plus, he feels he will get better.

Edit: Here is a "bonus" Norman video with Dave Dameshek.

Two "interesting" cats!

There's a lot of people who like/support Norman.  I've watched him lose a lot of that support over the past few weeks tho.  I understand players have huge egos, and feel like they're the best at what they do, but some of the stuff he's saying is borderline insane.  Talking that kind of mess, especially so openly, isn't going to help his case.  Gettleman won't waiver, so I don't expect him to be here after this season, if he even makes it that long.

My stance on Norman is I don't blame him one damn bit for wanting as big a payday as possible. He deserves a massive raise from the way he has played the past few years. I get that the NFL is a business and we can't keep all our young guys on super cheap deals forever. Logically thinking, and how Gettleman builds teams, I don't foresee him forking over top 3 money for a CB. The position is not that important to our defensive scheme that it warrants a top paid player at that position. So there's the contradiction. I think Norman DESERVES to get paid because he's one of the best in the league, but I don't want to pay him that much because it might hurt our team in the long run.

Paying Cam top dollar makes sense, you need a franchise QB in order to compete. Paying Kuechly made sense, you need a smart defensive QB running things on the field. Paying the O and D Lines makes sense because those are the closest guys on the field to the QB - The most important person on the field. CB can be schemed around much easier than those other positions. Just don't throw it towards that guy on that one play. I think KK, Star, Turner, Norwell, etc. are more important to our future success than Norman is. Paying Norman top dollar means we can't potentially sign these other guys who arguably, have a bigger impact on our overall team success.

That doesn't mean I don't value what Norman does or can do, nor do I think he doesn't deserve his dues. He does. I just don't think it's the smartest long term investment for us.

I'm not saying he doesn't "deserve" a substantial pay increase, because he does.  However, what he thinks he deserves, and what he actually deserves, are not in the same stratosphere.  Then factor in the things he's saying, and he's starting to sound pretty loony.

Nah, that's just Josh being Josh. He has said in the past that in order to be the best, you have to act and carry yourself like the best. He thinks he's the best corner in the league, and he played like it last year. It's part of his character and why he is who he is. I agree with you though, he doesn't deserve top 3 money based on age, overall performance (can't ignore the benching and early struggles for one good contract year), and the cap situation. Having said that though, I can guarantee you that there are teams out there that would pay him as the #1 corner in the league in FA. Look at the deal Olivier Vernon got from the Giants this offseason. And he's only above average with potential to be great. Jenkins got 12 mil per and he is only average with one good year with a ton of TDs given up. Norman outplayed him significantly so with the market being the way it is, Norman would warrant at least 12 mil per.

Norman proved this past year that he can play at an elite level, and there are teams dumb enough to fork over that kind of money for one guy on the open market. More power to him, but personally, I think giving him anymore than 10-12 per year is too much. I really think we are renting him for one more year and letting him walk. He will get paid handsomely this time next year and it will reset the market on the CB position. It just won't be by us.

We won a couple of games on Norman's shoulders early in the season.

That we did, but When Kuechly came back, it was pretty evident who the best defensive player on the team was.

Again, Norman killed it and I won't deny how awesome he is and I love having him on the team. But notice how much less of an impact he had going forward when teams knew to avoid him. Just the nature of the CB position (in my opinion).

The same reason people are starting to hate on him is a large part of the reason why people loved him in the first place. Everyone loves the cocky swagger until it comes to contract time.

I think it's less of the cocky swagger, and more the absurd comments.

THIS! ^^^^^

I plead guilty, too.  I'm getting just a bit sick of all of J-No's talk about his contract.  But I love to hear his talk during the season.  So.... I'm trying to just let Josh be Josh and trust G'man will do what's best for the team.  Hope it ends up being good for Josh too and that we can strike a fair deal.  If anyone can do it, it will be Dave.

I get where he's coming from.  He thinks he's the best and wants to be paid like it.  I can't hate on that.

I recently left a job I liked working for people that I liked supporting products that I liked because I knew I was worth more than they were paying me.  I took a look around and got an offer for 50% more.  I brought the offer to them and they couldn't even come close.  No hard feelings, but I gotta go.  They completely understood and I understood why they couldn't offer me more.  Business is business.  We wished each other luck and still stay in touch
