"Scary Interest" in USC S/LB Su'a Cravens

Probably not, but do you not recall all the bitching about Roman being awful in coverage?

Yes.

That's what fans do... bitch.  And there were definitely times Harper *was* awful in coverage.  I would hazard to say that wasn't 100% of the time, but the times he was horrible were obvious.

Now get a young guy back there that's may not be fast but is FASTER and definitely more agile?  Sounds like an upgrade to me.  Sometimes (most of the time really) in this league, its hard to have *elite* players at EVERY position.  Sometimes, especially if it only costs you a 2nd round draft choice, you settle for the "pretty darned good".

Source for Roman running a 4.65? Everything I've seen shows a 4.5 flat.

Agility Tests

Campus: 4.65 in the 40-yard dash (against the wind) … 4.58 40-yard dash (wind-aided) … 370-pound bench press … 385-pound squat … 300-pound power clean … 33.5-inch vertical jump … 33 -inch arm length … 9 -inch hands … Right-handed … 26/35 Wonderlic score.

Combine: Bench-pressed 225 pounds 19 times. … Did not participate in agility tests because of a left hamstring pull.

Roman was also a 10 year vet. That's much different.

Su'a Cravens listed at 6'1 226 : 16 reps of 225, 27" Vert (surprisingly low) 114.0 broad. Didn't run 40 at combine.

Reading up on this guy this does sound a lot like a Gettleman guy.  Big hard hitting SS that plays in the box.  Could be a Harper replacement.   I read someone saying a hard hitting SS in the box is a dying breed, possibly around the rest of the NFL, but in our Defense playing a lot of Cover 3 with the "slow" run stopping SS in the box, Cravens is a fit.  Whats also good about walking a SS down in the box to play run, we can also use this SS in a big nickel package with Boston and Coleman still in.  Kind of the same philosophy as Shaq.  I personally don't see us drafting him.  I would much rather choose number 1 and 2 of drafting pass rusher and aid to running the ball first.

Shaq is a LB and was drafted to play LB. He was slow for a safety. He has average long speed for a LB, but has elite times in the agility drills. Cravens has about the same speed as Shaq, but not nearly the same burst and change of direction and we'd be playing Cravens at a position that requires more speed and agility. He's a worse version of Shaq and we didn't even consider Shaq at SS.

As mentioned already...Su'a has game speed.

It sounds like most teams are scouting him as a SS so I'd imagine he can play that position in the NFL. He did a damn good job at it during his years at USC. Good luck to opposing teams trying to run against us.

He played closer to the Line in what USC called their "Dollar" position the last two years. It's a hybrid SLB and Safety position. His Freshman year he started at SS and made the Freshman All American team. He definitely has the agility and instincts to play SS in the NFL, but you'll still use him as a blitzer because he's VERY good at it.

Kam Chancellor is slow for a safety and is bad in coverage. I've mentioned that about 5 times now. Kam is much more LB than S and they are able to do that because of Earl Thomas.

Also, what you bolded refers to Shaq. Shaq is a LB. He was drafted to be a LB.

This.  I've always argued that Earl Thomas is the piece that makes that's Seahawks secondary go.

The issue with us having a SS like Craven is that we don't have an Earl Thomas.  With all due respect to Kurt Coleman, he's not Earl Thomas.

Bc we didn't need him to be a safety last year. Gman has a blue print of a Champiosnhip team. He wants fast LBs.

however, if Shaq was to be asked to play SS tomorrow I bet you my money he'll do it.

I'm sure he would. I bet if we asked Kelvin to play TE he would do that too. That doesn't mean it's going to happen.
