Rivera says HC is the only one who should be on media hotseat after Super Bowl loss

Many were critical about the way the NFL set up the post-Super-Bowl interviews at Levi Stadium, including Rivera, but he has taken it a step further:

“I think the thing that we all have to take a step back and realize and think about, what we ask players to do after a game like that is tremendously unfair. I really do mean that too, and personally I've always felt like in a situation like that there is only one person that needs to talk and that's the head coach,” Rivera said at the NFC coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings. “That's the person you should pull out and put in front of everybody, let him handle the situation and answer the questions. I really do believe that.”

And, you know, it really makes sense from a human,  empathic perspective. It seems like the league office is more concerned about the soap opera aspect by mandating losers of the Superbowl to be interviewed, than the soap box aspect of getting the technicalities of what went wrong (which is usually painfully obvious anyway).

Having losers comment on a Super Bowl loss two or three days out makes plenty of sense to me.

The losing team sounds better than "losers" when speaking in regards to the Panthers.

I really agree with that. It's a dickhead move to interview super bowl losing players right after losing the biggest game of their life. Should be some kind of waiting time or at least minimum 24 hour period for them to just mentally recover from losing the game to do interviews and questions.

I don't agree that how the media feels they are absolutely entitled to have SB losing players be extremely humble and spend long amount of time answering stupid questions in detail. Then they get all offended and fuel bunch of other nfl fans to get offended because Cam didn't answer the questions like they wanted him to.

And having the players in close proximity to bronco players who were interviewing at the same time was stupid beyond belief as well.

I can see both sides of the now vs later argument, although i side with the later because i don't need the soap opera bs, but for the love of God how cruel is it to interview them in the same room as the winning team members. Let them interview in a seperate area or clear one team out totally before the other team comes in. Have a heart and stop being jackasses.

Before anyone tries to say it, no i never knew this before it happened to us and YES I would be saying this no matter who the teams were. Much as I was once told when making the baseball team as a freshman in high school, show some respect for the guy that just "died."

I love Cam. Have supported him since day 1. I love coach Rivera. He has really grown on me and I am aware I have been unfair to him in the past. I agree with him that players shouldn't be put in that situation and the coaches should be the one to take the heat. I appreciate him saying that and for defending Cam the way he did today. I can also guarantee that this will not get lost in the locker room and this is why the players love him.

but with all of that said, this is getting dumb. No matter how we feel or Cam feels, this had not been an issue for 49 straight years. This was not an issue until Cam walked out. If Cam feels like he did nothing wrong then this should just die and there should be no defending.

They could at least have the losing team in a different room/locale than the winning team.  It's just incredibly messy.

That's the biggest issue. I disagree with Ron about this and think that players should talk to the media afterwards, but I do appreciate him sticking up for Cam.

Thats the part I think is getting missed in all this.  Cam could hear the Broncos players answering their questions.

I'm not condoning the walkout.  Hes paid millions to answer the questions, but it could be set up a little better.  I couldn't even face the world the next day.  I can only imagine being forced into a room with the people who just ruined my season gloating over how they beat me and having to answer dumb questions.  They would not have been able to air my responses for the expletives.

Like momma always said, If you dont have anything nice to say dont say nothin.  Cam didnt have anything nice to say.

I appreciate Rivera for defending Cam, but I'm trying to figure out why the media can't just let this go? It's been over a month now and they're acting like this just happened last night. I always said Cam shouldn't have walked out, but it isn't THAT serious. These idiots are blowing this WAY out of proportion. The NFL just needs to have the winning and losing teams interviewed in separate areas.

They'll talk about it every chance they get because a lot of idiots fugers got offended by cam not talking much/walking out,  and it became a controversial issue because of it.  Since its controversial it generates a lot of clicks/views for media sources.

There's a lot of people who think if you don't answer the questions in detail after super bowl loss that automatically makes you a the ultimate villain crybaby of the NFL. I can tell you by talking with a a bunch of NFL fans (non panther fans) after the game, looking at conversations on various social media sites too, it seems like people were frothing at the mouth at a chance to paint cam as negatively as possible and make him seem like he made some irredeemable act of evil instead of just walking out of a press conference.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
