Jesus Christ I f*cking hate this sh*t. Touchbacks going to the 25 is completely retarded and automatic ejections is too especially at two personal fouls which could be terrible calls or even plays that are completely fine and not cheap but are penalties.

It's not personal fouls, it's unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

The rule change states that players will be ejected for two violations of the following penalties in a game:

(a) Throwing a punch, or a forearm, or kicking at an opponent, even though no contact is made.
(b) Using abusive, threatening, or insulting language or gestures to opponents, teammates, officials, or representatives of the League.
(c) Using baiting or taunting acts or words that engender ill will between teams.

If you want to do away with the run back just do away with kickoffs. Who wants to see a guy catch a ball in the end zone.

I van also see the NFL deciding games with new ejection rule. Two bs calls then bam winner winner cam Newton out for the game.

I don't understand what is gained by moving the touchbacks up.

scoring is my guess.  5 yards will be the difference between a FG and punt, in theory.  I think it opens up the playbook too.  But in the end, A kick returner catching the ball 5-yards deep has 30 yards to go when touching a knee would do the same thing without risking injury or turnover.

The big problem I have is TV.  are we going to see a score--then 3 minutes of commercials---watch a kickoff get downed for 11 seconds----3 more minutes of commercials.  etc?

They aren't. It's a very narrow group of personal fouls that can lead to an ejection. 5 total I think. Most of them involve fighting, taunting or verbal abuse of the ref or another player. Helmet to helmet hits aren't even one of them.

Thank you for the clarification!

I see touchbacks at the 25-yard potentially changing the direction we've seen over the past few seasons and discourage kickers going for touchbacks. As it stands some teams have kickers with big legs and the aim is to kick the ball out of the end zone, thus most of the time after kick offs teams start at the 20 yard line. Thus, with this change there is no longer an incentive to kick the ball out of the end zone because a team starts at the 25 yard line. This means kickers will have to become more skilful and do what punters do and aim for the ball to land as close to the end zone as possible, in order to create the longest possible distance an opposition offense needs to drive the ball down the field.

I think kickers like Dan Carpenter will be happy with this change because under the previous rule they were seen as not having a strong enough leg because they didn't get enough touchbacks. Under the new rule they have a better situation because leg strength is no longer the main thing in kick offs, it's having the ability to get the ball to land inside the field and give enough hang time to allow special team players to take the returner down.

If the aim of this was to protect players, I think they will fail because teams will get their kickers doing what punters do, and thus, there's more risk.

However, if the aim was to create more kick returns and excitement on that end, then this may help because more returns should result in this because teams won't want their opposition to start at the 25 yard line.
