Would like to see Gman take a DE in the first couple rounds then a DT later on as an insurance for Star since there is a chance we may not be able to keep him and KK short on long term deals.

But Gman said today he is working on keeping both. He knows he can't keep everybody. But he plans to keep Stah, and KK.

Signing Love will put us in a good position to go BPA in the draft with the Dline an area to worry less about....

If we sign Love, that will A) solidify our DT position, B) help narrow the draft field and help with prioritization.

I REALLY don't think signing Love will have much of an impact on the draft, nor would it solidify the DT position. He's kinda redundant after signing Soliai, to be honest. The DL would certainly still be an issue as Star, Love, and Soliai are all 1-techs, with Short being the only 3-tech on the roster after we cut Dwan. Still gotta find another 3T before we've really filled all the needs.

Now, we did initially carry three 1T last year in Star, Love, and Colin Cole; though the main reason for that was Star's injury. Of course, Cole was cut soon thereafter when they brought in DEs Allen and Delaire once CJ went down. Basically, even if they bring Love back he may be a bit of a longshot to make the 53 unless he can outperform Soliai.

Star, Love, and Soilai eat up blockers right?  Don't we want another KK type DT?  Do you take all three to camp with the intentions of keeping Star and either Love or Soilai?  I'm asking because I don't know.

Probably. Love is capable of being the pass rush DT but it's not really what he's best at. Ideally we get that guy in the draft since it's loaded with interior pass rushers. Taking all 3 NTs to camp provides some injury insurance as well in case Star has another foot issue or Soliai disappoints because he's old and you could always roll with those 4 if it came down to it even though it isn't optimal.

My guess would be that Getts is trying to get Love on a really cheap so he can be easily cut if all goes to plan with getting another pass rusher in the draft and there are no injuries or he can be kept if he's needed for cheap. Love probably isn't thrilled with that option which is why it's taking a while to sign him since he would be hoping for something more guaranteed and trying to see if someone else will offer that. He's been on a minimum salary his entire career and this is likely his only shot at anything resembling a big pay day since he's already 28.

I can see what you are saying about Love looking to get a decent contract on the open market. He deserves the opportunity. The only real problem with that is, that if Gman gets the DT he loves in the draft. There won't be an open spot for Love on the team.  The only way I see Love back on the team. Is if Gman strikes out at DT in the draft. Barring him being picked up by another team anywho.

IMO, Gman would love to walk away from this draft with a top shelf DT. Shore up 3/4 of the interior for the next 4-5 years. And great insurance for if we were to lose KK, or Stah.

Solid, helpful comment.  Thanks.  Agree.

Even though he's primarily a 1Tech, It wouldn't surprise me if we do bring Love back, even if it's just for camp competition.  As it stands now, Soliai would pretty much be guaranteed a spot in the rotation.  We saw last year that Ron & Dave were pretty much trying to ensure real & meaningful competition at just about every position with the exception of QB, MLB and the specialists (P, K, LS).  (Heck, this year we're even guaranteed some competition at P!)

Also, I wonder if they'll lighten Star's playing time in the pre-season to avoid unnecessary risk to his foot?  It seems like it healed well, and wasn't an issue we heard about at all during the latter half of the season, but it's got to be in the back of G'man's mind that it could possibly recur.

It's pretty common for the Panthers to carry nine defensive linemen.

Five tackles and four ends in an option.

Only if you count practice squad.

2015: Star, Short, Love, Edwards

2014: star, short, cole, Edwards

2013: star, short, cole, Edwards.

Who am I missing?...Other than when Love was signed when Star got hurt at the end of 14?

Cole was still on the roster for the first month of the 2015 season.

I'm not sure we carry as many defensive ends this year as we have in prior seasons. Anything is possible, though.

For 2015 I think our predominant roster was:

DTs:  We started the year with Star, Short, Love, Edwards & Cole.  (Cole was cut on Sept 30th once Star was recovered and CJ was injured)

DEs:  We started the year with CJ, Ealy, Addison, Horton.  Then when CJ was hurt and sent to short-term IR (9/29), we brought in Jared Allen.  A day later we brought in DE Ryan Delaire.  (Cole's release freed up a place for Delaire).

When CJ came back, Horton was dealing with a 4 week suspension, meaning we had a spot open for CJ.  When Horton's suspension ended he was eventually brought back to PS but did not return to the active roster.

So, yes, we did have 9 Dline guys active all season.  Usually it's been 5 DEs / 4 DTs.

That's been the primary pattern for the past few, although we know Gettleman isn't tied to certain quotas at certain positions. He always preaches best 53.

off topic question

what do diabetic players drink on the sidelines?  if they were chugging gatorade wouldn't their blood sugar be all over the place?

Coconut Water? Supplement sugary drink w protein? No expert on diabetic diets but I think if you match protein w the carb you are supposed to be okay for the most part.

I mean, I would think that water alone would be just fine. Fluids seem to be more important than the electrolytes; I mean he isn't running a marathon here; he just has to last a few hours.
