Look at the projected 2017 cap space. It's $75M. That doesn't include Drew Brees who will take up a significant portion of that whenever he gets a new deal, but they aren't in nearly as much trouble as everyone thinks in the long term.

That's with how many players under contract?

I mean they'll extend Brees this year to get under, so that $10 million they'll save this year has to go somewhere. So I figure baseline $20 million a year for Brees without the extra from extending this year, $10-12 million for Armstead, $7-8 million for Vaccaro and $8 million for Unger. Knowing Loomis they'll heavily backload giving them $50 million in 2017 and they'll go spending. All the while they depend on the arm of Brees not giving out otherwise their strategy of pouring all resources into the current season fails.

34 which right around average. For comparisons sake, the Panthers have 30 under contract and $70M in projected space(that includes our QB though).

And our middle linebacker, among others.

Yes, our team and cap situation is better than theirs. That's not up for debate. The point is that the Saints are not nearly as screwed long term as they are made out to be. Their cap clears up a lot next year.

I have a lot of confidence in their ability to screw it up again.

They're robbing Peter to pay Paul. They tendered their RFA TE Josh Hill and had to account for that tender in their cap this year. The Bears just signed him to an offer sheet yesterday. Doesn't look like the Saints will match the Bears offer. The tweet from Schefter says the Saints reached agreement with LB Robertson, not that he was signed, same as when Soliai agreed to our deal but took 2 days to sign it. Tells me they are waiting to get Josh Hill 's $1.671 million tender off their cap before they can officially sign Robertson. Hill's offer sheet is for 3 years, $7.5 million with $3.25 million guaranteed. Saints have 5 days to match that or lose Hill.

Especially when a team is willing to throw $7+ million a year to an average TE. You can bet your britches if they had $30 million in cap space they'd have used every dollar. Only thing that's kept them above water is the increase in salary cap each season. To be fair the reason they're so tight this year is because they have $25 million in dead cap.

That's a great signing for them.

In my best Bud Kilmer impersonation, "for which team?"  His reputation as a lazy bum had neither the Lions nor Rams in any hurry to resign him, and no other teams lining up for his services.  He is talented and can flash potential and obviously that's what they're counting on.  But it's no different than having no money and buying a $30 scratch off with the credit card hoping you strike it rich, possibly may "win" $50, but most likely are pissing away the money and will have to pay interest on the purchase.

The Saints have more than 30million in dead money this year for players who are no longer on the team.  That's almost 20% of the cap. Combine that with a bottom feeder defense and another. 30 million in cap dedicated to Brees (before his extention) and you have a team in turmoil, scrambling to grab anything that hasn't started to completely smell.  If Payton hadn't sold his soul for $45 million, he'd be gone too.  This team is on the ropes and the division isn't getting any easier.  The bags are on getting stacked by the door and it won't be long before their back
