My best friend and both my brother in laws foolishly bought boats.  After the first summer when they talked about how awesome it was.....they mainly talk about how it isn't worth the money, they don't have time to go out as much as they want, are debating about selling, etc.

meanwhile, I just enjoy going out on their boat. 

exceptions to everything, but overall it is simply is better to know a guy with a boat than be the guy with the boat

Disagree completely, but just like you said exceptions to everything.

I love having my boat, been without one for about 5 months total over the last 14 years.  Hoping on it with the wife and a cooler right after work, riding to Dockside and grabbing a shrimp burger, and just being able to be on the water 5 or 6 days per week is pretty awesome.

Yes, they are money pits, but you can't take it with you.
