I'd rank:

1. San Andreas, 2. V, 3. Vice city, 4. GTAIII, 5. GTA IV (and it is still a great game - just a PITA to constantly drive back and forth across maps because you always get a phone call from someone on the other side of the map)

You could take cabs in GTA IV and just skip the ride. But I always enjoyed driving so I rarely used them.

It's pretty much impossible for me to pick a favorite GTA. But I will say that GTA III was the most mind blowing of all the games for its time. When it came out it felt like something truly revolutionary. I remember reading previews for the game in magazines and thinking it probably wouldn't be anything special. A lot of series that had tried to jump from 2D to 3D didn't fair well.

Don't remember having much trouble with the maps in GTA IV, but Shoreside Vale can go fug itself when it comes to navigation

Pretty sure there was an achievement or something that made me not want to skip taxi rides in GTA IV.

It wasn't until Red Dead Redemption until I said fug it and started skipping those long horserides with the camp/teleport thing.

I also remember the driving physics would get crazy sometimes in GTA IV. But that game had a lot of hidden stuff and side missions that I loved.

I didn't like 5 all that much. Vice city to me is the ultimate albeit the map is a little small.

That was one of my favorite games for sure. Having it set in the 80s made that game. Its smaller than the GTAs that came after that but the setting is better and it doesn't take 30 minutes to navigate the map. I like it a lot better than San Andreas. The map is exactly what Florida looks like and the 80s movie/tv parallels (scarface) are cool.

 They have a Ferrari Testarosa (the Cheetah, I think), that was my favorite car in the game - best handling. I'd cruise around listening to Billie Jean, Herbie Hancock, and Rock Box.
