Isn't Joe the one that ticked off Rivera during a press conference during the season when he kept pressing Rivera on something til he almost lost his cool with him? When I read Joe's article, I read them with a sort of skeptic's view.

Best thing to do, is not even read it. If an article links to the observer, I don't read it. It's never breaking news and sometimes not even reality.

They are both FS. That might work in passing situations so for us he would only be a situational player demanding starting money. He was never more than a blip on the radar.

Weddle can play SS, and that was always the presumption.

Yes, the "blip on the radar" was a pipe dream that crashed and burned as reality set in.

No. He is a FS. If he could be an every down SS, we might have had an interest but that is not his skill set. That presumption is why so many peoples little dream was only a dream.

He played nearly half of his snaps at SS the past two years and even played nickel. He's versatile which is exactly what Rivera and McD and Wilks like. It was never gonna happen but Weddle would've been a huge addition to the secondary. And no at this point in their careers Weddle is still much better than Coleman. Coleman was a liability in coverage.

I think that it would behoove any Panthers fan to read any article dealing with Panthers personnel moves with a "skeptic's view" (especially this time if year) until it's reported by the Panthers. J-Rich and G-man don't explicitly say a whole lot. One has to read the tea leaves, and seemingly that includes the reporters that cover the team.

Edit: Oh yeah, to answer your question, yeah that was Joe.

G-Man plays things pretty close to the vest when it comes to players, contracts and such. Even if G-Man has put out an offer to Weddle, Person wouldn't know, it's something this team just doesn't discuss.

Both Coleman and Weddle have played both safety positions. I think a little too much is made of the difference between the two.

I would say the big thing in Rivera/McD's defense is that the SS needs to be strong in run support.  I would love it if we drafted Jeremy Cash.  He could start alongside Coleman Day 1 IMO.

Person has definitely been more clickbait-y this offseason, though that could be the result of an edict from the Observer.

"Here's a list of free agents the Panthers could target! (Linked with a picture of Bruce Irvin)" - "Panthers not likely to sign any big names."

"Panthers interested in Weddle!" - *Article contains nothing linking Panthers to Weddle*

"Dave Gettleman indicates the Panthers won't spend big on free agents" - While it's probably accurate that he won't, again the article is devoid of anything confirming the title.

Person is a lazy journalist.  Here is what I mean--instead of digging into a story, he speculates.  OK to do some of that, but don't present it as if you have some inside knowledge.  There are stories on every team.  Instead of digging, looking for an angle, etc. He speculates---I am fairly sure he scours the internet for material.  When you are the team beat writer and the Baltimore Sun scoops you routinely, there is an issue.

About the big names--good for Gettlemen.

It seems that people always over pay for free agents based on productivity when they became free agents.   Rarely do top free agents perform as well on their new teams.  So they usually grossly underperform their high-dollar contracts.

Not only do they underperform, they take $$$ away from the GM's ability to upgrade other positions.

How often has Gettlemen landed a Marlin while bottom fishing?  I can think of several (Mitchell, Coleman, Love, Remmers, Norwell, Brown, Webb, etc.  That is some talent.  I want him spending on known commodities.
