Joe Person's Weddle Backpedal

Said it last week, there was never much interest in Weddle. He won't be coming here.

I missed that thread (if there was one), otherwise I wouldn't have gotten my hopes up.

In this thread, the dislike for Person seems almost tangible. The thing is though, there also seems to be a perception (very much based in reality) that the Panthers are really second to none as far as being close-mouthed about their potential moves. It's almost like J-Rich is the Godfather that the Charlotte Observer and reporters are loath to piss off for fear of being chopped off at the knees like possibly happened to Darin Gantt (who rubs many the wrong way with his snark).

All this being said, it would seem to me that people would give reporters that cover the Panthers a generous amount of grace. If you know they are "speaking out of their ass" so to speak, then perhaps everyone should justifiably lower their expectations accordingly.

Why whine about Person or David Newton, or any of them when you know that it's insanely difficult to garner any substantive information from the organization? The only thing that really bothers me is deliberate misinformation, otherwise I am good with what they do, and, personally (what a pun), that's why I enjoy the---what I'll refer to as---the "off-note" stories the most.

I've seen Huddlers get snarky about some of our reporters not breaking news, for example, but in this environment that is not what journalism is always about, sometimes the stories about reactions are much more interesting like the one Steve Reed did on Steve Smith. Moreover, the human side of the equation should perhaps be put upon a higher pedestal than rote, routine "breaking" news that is hard to come by in regards to the organization.

Just food for thought.

Most of Gettleman's free agent signings are reclamation projects who he feels fit our system.  Talented guys who for whatever reason haven't become the player many thought they would be or vets who will be dirt cheap who may have a little gas left in the tank.

High priced vets at the end of their primes don't fit into Gettleman's plans.

The issue is that he "broke" the news as if he had knowledge that the Panthers were going to pursue Weddle.  He didn't.  He was just taking a shot in the dark because Weddle plays a position of need and has a past with Rivera.  It's the same reason why many in the national media were speculating Weddle possibly to Carolina.  The difference is that those guys never claimed to be doing anything more than purely speculating.  Old Joe acted like he actually knew something.  In reality, Joe was just doing what Joe does best - making himself look like an incompetent idiot.

Yeah, good or bad, this is the Panther way. I mostly agree with it, but I just wonder where adaptability plays into the equation---or situational acquisition, if you will---comes into play.

Gettleman, rightly or wrongly, seems very formulaic in reference to his team building philosophy. Like saying that "you're never one player away", for example, which sounds reasonable in theory, but isn't necessarily the reality depending upon a particular player's skill set and what he brings to the team when you're close to winning a Lombardi. This isn't necessarily the thread for the argument, but it's just a thought.

Yes, LG,  I have basically alluded to that fact a couple of times in this thread.

Isn't Joe the one that ticked off Rivera during a press conference during the season when he kept pressing Rivera on something til he almost lost his cool with him? When I read Joe's article, I read them with a sort of skeptic's view.

I think that it would behoove any Panthers fan to read any article dealing with Panthers personnel moves with a "skeptic's view" (especially this time if year) until it's reported by the Panthers. J-Rich and G-man don't explicitly say a whole lot. One has to read the tea leaves, and seemingly that includes the reporters that cover the team.

Edit: Oh yeah, to answer your question, yeah that was Joe.

The interest was in having Weddle and Coleman on the field at the same time.

They are both FS. That might work in passing situations so for us he would only be a situational player demanding starting money. He was never more than a blip on the radar.

No surprise. Joe pedals false drama almost constantly, his questions in press conferences prove that. He isn't trying to report as much as break a big drama story that'll propel him out of football. So he throws crap at the wall hoping it sticks so that if it is true he gets big recognition. Him and David Newton are terrible and I take everything they report with a grain of salt. They both are only out to make names for theirselves and it doesn't matter if it's true or rumor.
