FA Luxuries...Could a strong addition be on the horizon?

We're at an interesting point with our current roster: Looking from the bottom up, we still have adequate depth and not really a substantial starter hole minus maybe safety or slot cornerback.  (I guess punter now haha)

This gives us a luxury to use some of the FA money for a strong signing to really round out this squad.  DG has set things up where the team is home grown to such an extent where $ is being used to extend/re-sign critical components while continuing to build.  With CJ and Tolbert back on cheap, we have money to spend (not a ton or anything) but enough for a good pickup.  Also, I think having balance in how the team salary is spent is important to consider.  With Norman either on a deal or with the tag, that's some cash spent at CB. 

Also, it's important to consider we're looking for locker room/culture fits along with talent.  That's why I think we're in play and may get one of these guys in the coming days:

Eric Weddle -- I know, he's been mentioned ad nauseam but it's a strong possibility.  We don't really have much invested money wise in the safety group.   

Anquan Boldin -- He's still got something in the tank and would be great insurance if we don't add a guy via the draft.  It could backslide Brown/Norwood/Bersin/Hill, but could make sense.  He is 35 but still has it.

It just seems we're in position now to retain our quality, draft impact guys again, and add a big piece via FA instead of the usual mid-level grabs (we still may get some)

Weddle and Boldin would be my picks right now.  I really wanted us to trade a 6/7th last year for him, he would have helped.  I wouldn't be surprised if we still get Coples and resign Love.

Dude, I believe many of us believe that Weddle is actually a real possibility. 

Boldin would have been a strong addition a few years back, now I don't know. Maybe he'd be a nice role player.

I thought that Floyd retired.

Mike Wallace, however distasteful, may be a good fit here.

I kinda like the idea of Mike Wallace...similar to Ginn Jr...he might just thrive in this offense.

Honestly, I guess you could consider Weddle a luxury. Other than Coples and perhaps Wallace, everyone else seems like  a Dollar Tree purchase. Maybe Getty makes an impulse buy as he strolls down the aisle.

This is very much a G-man type pool of players this year.

Maybe it could be a guy like Rishard Matthews or Jermain Kearse.  It's definitely a DG pool, so maybe we get a 4-6 year vet that's still got plenty in the tank.  Basically a slightly more impact of a signing than let's say Coleman was last year.  We're in good shape as a team.

Boldin obviously isn't a starter any more but we are missing a veteran wideout and I can't think of a better option than Boldin. Also seems like he would fit the locker room extremely well

He still managed two strong 100 yard games with Gabbert under center down the stretch.  He'd instantly be better than what we have had in Cotchery, Brown etc. these past few seasons.  KB-Boldin-Funch-Ginn...with Olsen is a hell of a group.  Cheers. 

That's what I'm thinking when thinking about who we grab: Are they known to be solid talents with a good attitude/locker room presence.  That's actually why I think Kearse is an under the radar possibility.

weddle is a real possibility

 

boldin would be an excellent replacement for cotchery. he's better in pretty much every way and likely won't choke the superbowl away for us. he is old, but he plays like old man steve smith at this point in their careers.

mike wallace COULD produce some big numbers in our offense, but there's no telling if he still WANTS to put in work. also with ginn still here there would be no point in paying substantially more money for an iffy potential upgrade.

It does seem interesting that things are very quiet on the Weddle front, at least from the tweets I've read.  Wonder who's talking to him....

In my mind, with resigning CJ & Tolbert, our biggest holes are:

1) DT  (replace Dwan... and also there's still no word on LOVE, so that could be 2 DTs we need to replace!)

2) CBs:  Nickel & depth

3) Safety

Anything on offense is a bit of a luxury.  I'd have no problem with adding someone, but I'm not seeing a huge need.

Fair assessment for the more pressing needs.  Also, Weddle is making me wonder.  There's no way him and his agent are in contact with some teams at the moment.  Just not making any news.

Weddle brings intelligence to the defensive backfield.  He anticipates, calls coverages, etc.  Harper was a bad player but he was a leader.

Will the Panthers sign Coples now?  It could play out.

Don't get me wrong, I'd smile if we acquire Boldin. Perhaps he would be just what the doctor ordered. I just don't see him as much of a luxury pick anymore due to his age and what he'd presumably command from the max two-year deal that I see him getting.

As for Rishard Matthews, he has shown notable promise making plays. He runs good routes and gets open inasmuch as the pros do, but he has one of the highest drop rates in the league. Wallace's hands aren't the est either, but he's a burner.

Depending upon what happens with Weddle and Coples respectively, I think that a strong addition would be a William Moore or a Derrick Shelby. Hell, is Prince Amukamara an option? What about a Brandon Boykin? 

As for competition, Bilal Powell would push our RBs, so in that sense I would see him as a purely luxury pick or strong addition in that it would make a statement.

That being said, if we don't make any FA additions, I won't lose sleep over it because we have players that we have been developing that may turn out better than what's left. However, Weddle and Coples would be very satisfying to say the least.

Boldin had some good games on a team where he was expected to do too much at his age/career.  Here we wouldn't need him to do anything like that (unless some unfortunate injury happens).    He's a tough player and I think he'd fit this team.
