Charles Johnson taking less money isn't Gettlemagic, it's JRmagic

To be honest. I expected this to happen with CJ. He wanted more money than Gman was willing to give him. Gman cut him so he could see what the FA market would be like. CJ decided that he wanted to stay close to his hometown of Hawkensville, GA. Suprisingly people offered him around 6 Million $. He decided to take the 3 mil plus the extra 4 mil. Which is probably what the Panthers were offering to begin with. He took the extra million and got to stay in Carolina. A win-win scenario for Carolina and CJ. Time for us to chase that first ring.

51 FOR 51!

Where are you getting the extra 4 from? He was cut because he had an huge salary this year. He came back for 3 which is much less. There is no extra 4 million.

Nice!

At the end of the day, it's about business with J-Rich and G-man. Nothing personal, just business. However, for CJ it was more than about business. It was about his family and principles. He obviously cared about the way that he is perceived, from a field, community and business standpoint (or he never would have taken the deal or made the "Big Money" comnent). He knows that he has had it pretty good and decided to sacrifice millions elsewhere to keep a balanced and happy life here---both emotionally and financially---in a bigger-picture sense (if y'all know what I'm saying).

This is a guy who is arguably still in his prime (who was arguably derailed by injuries in 2015), and he gives a real hometown discount.

Make no mistake, this was an extraordinary move by an obviously extraordinary person. Props to Small Money.

the extra 4 mil in dead cap that he is getting paid from when we cut him. That takes 4 mil from our cap space

No.

The "extra 4 mil" (presumably you're talking about the dead money) is not money that CJ will get this year.  It was his signing bonus / restructuring bonus pro-rated over the life of the contract.  He got all that money up front, but for Cap purposes it is spread out over several years.

Giants or Bucs offered him 6 mil.  He came back to Panthers for 3 mil.

Money CJ will get this season = 3 mil.

Money on the Panthers books = 7 mil (3 mil + 4 mil dead money)

Cap hit saved 8 million.  (15 mi - 7 mil)..

Umm i think you're wrong. Teams can request player to take a pay cut without actually cutting them. Peyton Manning took a $4M pay cut before the start of the 2015 season. Yes it means the existing contract is voided and a new contract is signed with the updated terms, but it's been done in the NFL on several occasions.

CJ obviously refused to take a pay cut so Getts cut him. He tested the open market and decided to sign back with Carolina with the initial offer Getts made to him before he was cut. Yes I know he was offered $6M elsewhere and decided to sign with us for $3, but like I said, that has more to do with him finding value playing on an elite defense and a perennial playoff team than his relationship with Jerry.

We can agree to disagree, because unless one of us is secretly really Charles Johnson, we will never know his true reasons. But in my opinion, his relationship with Richardson must have played a very big role in how he feels towards the team, and had an influence on his decision to literally leave 3 million dollars on the table. And voiding a contract is in essence cutting someone, the only difference is that they allowed him to test the waters first.

I don't believe that there is any need to argue to what degree J-Rich played in this decision. I am sure he played his part in CJ's mind, but like I said earlier, this is more about the man that CJ is---and his principles---more than anything else.

If you guys didn't read CSX's link, then you should.  It actually provides the most insight as far as I'm concerned.  On some level, it was about JR, G-man and the team, but ultimately CJ is the reason that he returned to Charlotte.  His epiphany came while sitting in front of Jerry Reese.

"it came down to a numbers game. It's clear no other east coast team offered enough to perk his interest. "

You said it was a numbers game, but two east coast teams did offer more money. Therefore, it was not a numbers game.

No he said the numbers weren't enough to perk his interest....spell it out for ya....3 mil extra wasn't' enough to perk his interest...whereas 10 mil total may have....seriously not hard to understand.

My take on this :

CJ is opening a restaurant in Charlotte.  He's seen what being a passive investor in a restaurant did for Dan Morgan and he's not going to make that same mistake.  He figures it's at least one more year before his restaurant is open and has established itself, and he wants to be hands on during that period.  That means he wants to be in Charlotte.  Imagine being in his position with his relative youth.  He's not concerned about next year's paycheck, he's concerned about his paycheck when he's 45.

Probably idiot reasoning, but I haven't seen any other idiots step up to the podium.
