It's possible we told him he had until 4 tomorrow (free agency start time) if he decided to come back so that it wouldn't affect our comp. pick situation for 2017.

Now, I don't think that's what's happening here, but it's possible.

Why would it affect our comp picks in 2017?

Doesn't affect our comp pick situation regardless.  We cut him, he didn't leave as a FA.

I don't know why anyone is hating on CJ.  He was a great player here.  People wanted a GM who knew how to manage the cap and set the team up for long-term success and we finally got one.  The Gettlemans of the world cut players when their financial burden exceeds their productive capacity.  That's all it is with CJ.  CJ can still play, just not at the $15M a year level.

I don't understand the CJ hate when he's just trying to find another opportunity for himself.  Gettleman didn't cut D-Will or CJ b/c they were completely washed up, but b/c their contracts exceeded their value to the team.  That's the hard decisions GM's have to make.

CJ is one of the more underrated Panthers of all-time.  I will hate it if he goes to Tampa from a fan perspective, but I'm happy for him individually.  CJ played his heart and was our best defensive player in 2010.  There were some mailed-in performances on that team, but never from 95.

Don't hate him anymore than I hate anyone else who leaves as a free agent or gets cut.  It's just business.

I do agree with the decision to let him go.

Happens to all of the big name Panthers that leave.  Happened to Peppers (though he deserved it), happened to Smitty, happened to D-Will, happened to Hardy.  If Cam gets let go when he's 45 and goes to another team, it'll happen to him.  Same with Luke and every other player that fans get emotionally invested in.

thank god i don't waste my energy hating on some dude that the team cut.

CJ was a monster for four seasons and even this year he picked up a sack in every playoff game despite playing like doodie in the regular season. wish him nothing but the best. unless he becomes a buc. but even then i won't dislike the guy. just hope he doesn't do well against us. will enjoy seeing him continue to sack ratt myan at the very least.

If CJ is going to go to an NFCS rival, I guess I'd rather it be the Bucs than Atlanta.

I know the Bucs are improving, but with their coach carousel, it limits them a bit.  I'm a bit more worried with Atlanta under Quinn.  I think they are the team who'll most threaten us in the division.

agree

Yeah, there shouldn't be any vitriol towards CJ. He was a stand-up guy and played through injury plagued seasons the last few years.

He is really close with Big Cat and is one of the few Panthers to have his own skybox. We just got hosed by an astronomical cap-hit by his outlandish contract.

I think it's safe to say that DG and Co. are not gonna pay players on expectations in lieu of actual production...injured or not.

Happy trails, CJ. And welcome back if you somehow stay a Panther.

CJ was never great.... Above average yes great no... Let's not forget that every year except 2010 he had elite linemates.... Peppers,Hardy,Short ect...

So true...

It wouldn't surprise me if CJ is actually better suited as a DL in a 3-4 base defense. I say this because he's gotten bigger and slower with all the injuries.
