That is indeed what happened, and if he comes back he will still be a Detroit

Yeah, just a travesty all around. Guy gets drafted high to a bad team and gives it a face, gets paid mega bucks on his second contract, team doesn't do any better than two playoff appearances. Believe me, Megatron is not an innocent party that didn't get underpaid but as a player you just get tired of scrapping success and struggling to build on it.

It's almost like a rinse and repeat of Barry Sanders, a guy who's not an attention seeker having massive success on a team that had struggled for years. Both make the playoffs a couple times but never get far. In the end the front office starts making moves that seem to be counterproductive to building a championship team within 3-4 years and expect you to smile and be the face of Detroit while knowing you'll never get to the Super Bowl.

I'm guessing the compensation Quinn was asking for was either too high or non-existent. Rather than just release him and do the positive thing he decides to retain Johnson's rights hoping Johnson changes his mind.

And yet the annual ritual of someone predicting that this is finally the year the Lions become great will still go on.

Don't blame him at all, honestly. Lots of players would tell you that being stuck in a losing organization really wears on you over time
