If they only used the transition tag, why would they need to rescind it? All they'd have to do to let him go is not match the offer made by the other team.

To clear cap space and if he does sign the tag then they are stuck paying him $11M in 2016

If they fail to match an offer, they lose any potential compensatory pick, thereby getting zero compensation for losing his services.

They don't want to overpay him (which they would almost surely have to do when matching) because they are already badly strapped, but they don't want to get zero for him.

Just look up Miko Grimes. Absolutely not worth it.

She was just on Twitter talking about her husbands status with the team 45 mins ago. Brent Grimes' ole lady would cause some problems lol.

Yea, any tag can be pulled until the player signs the deal.  That's why guys holding out while on the tag is risky.  If they get hurt playinjg basketball or something the team can pull the tag.

Or say playing with fireworks

Vernon got the transition tag, not the franchise tag. All that means is that the Dolphins would have the right to match any offer sheet signed by Vernon. The signing team could structure the contract in a way to make it very hard, if not impossible, for the Phins to match the contract. This is what happened to them last year when they put the transition tag on Charles Clay and he signed a front-loaded contract with Buffalo. No draft pick compensation is involved for signing a transition tagged player away from his team.

edit: whoops, didn't see the last line in the OP. Carry on.

The Vikes did that once. They added a ridiculous rider, something about the amount of snow he could expect, that the original team couldn't match. Some folks thought it was dirty pool, and some folks thought it was funny. Not even sure how much of that is legal anymore.

It was a Center. I think he was from the Hawks. And his name was....Wilkerson?

Ah just forgive an old man his ramblings.
