If they only used the transition tag, why would they need to rescind it? All they'd have to do to let him go is not match the offer made by the other team.

If they fail to match an offer, they lose any potential compensatory pick, thereby getting zero compensation for losing his services.

 

They don't want to overpay him (which they would almost surely have to do when matching) because they are already badly strapped, but they don't want to get zero for him.

It doesn't directly affect us, but it does affect us.  Vernon knocks every other DE on that list down moving a better DE into our price range.

Yea, any tag can be pulled until the player signs the deal.  That's why guys holding out while on the tag is risky.  If they get hurt playinjg basketball or something the team can pull the tag.

The Vikes did that once. They added a ridiculous rider, something about the amount of snow he could expect, that the original team couldn't match. Some folks thought it was dirty pool, and some folks thought it was funny. Not even sure how much of that is legal anymore.
