Phins may un-tag Vernon

According to sources of b/r's Jason Cole, the Miami Dolphins might pull their franchise tag on Olivier Vernon. For those holding out hope that Dave Gettleman might bid for Vernon's services, this may just give you a little hope. I haven't got a handle on what to expect monetarily on this guy from a market standpoint, but it kind of feels like he will be too rich for Getty's tastes, but you never know.

After learning about the potential loss of compensatory picks if an offer is not matched using the transitional tag, I don't expect we'll  see it used but so much in the future.

Vernon got the transition tag, not the franchise tag. All that means is that the Dolphins would have the right to match any offer sheet signed by Vernon. The signing team could structure the contract in a way to make it very hard, if not impossible, for the Phins to match the contract. This is what happened to them last year when they put the transition tag on Charles Clay and he signed a front-loaded contract with Buffalo. No draft pick compensation is involved for signing a transition tagged player away from his team.

edit: whoops, didn't see the last line in the OP. Carry on.

KIf we sign a DE it'll likely be a vet like William Hayes or Robert Ayers. Maybe Mario Williams if the price is right.

I don't ever see us signing a big name player from another team for a big contract ever.

Hell, I wasn't even aware that a club could pull a tag, so I learned something.

I can't remember if you can rescind a franchise tag(you definitely can't once it's signed), but you can rescind a transition tag for sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if any tag couldn't be pulled before free agency actually begins, but once signed it's a done deal.

Perhaps a legal type will enlighten us.

I feel like I remember there being some talk/speculation that the Giants would rescind JPP's franchise tag after the fireworks accident last year so I want to say that you can, but I'm not 100% on it.
